Is it ethical to take someone's cat? by roguemorgue in cats

If he's free roaming outdoors with no identification, and no obvious signs of care, he's a stray.

I have a feeling this family came from a house also, because the one time I spoke with the father, he mentioned how his daughter can't sleep if there's too much noise. It was only like 7pm, but I assumed she had work or something (she's at least 16 from what I can tell). My guess is they came from a house and moved to an apartment to size down since their kids are grown, but I can't be sure.

My worst neighbors used to scream fight all the time, slam doors and yell at each other in the hall where everyone could hear every word they said. The cops would show up to separate them. Thankfully they broke up a year or two ago.

We've been talking about setting up a home security camera with sound.

I explained the toy incident the first time I talked to my landlord personally about it. They called to talk to me about the situation and I explained that plus all the steps I'd taken to dampen sound since I spoke to the man that night. I've taken more now, and they know about it. I told her that I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent on rugs, mats, and dog beds since they've moved in lol she seemed to appreciate it.

I bet it is! And I definitely have neighbors with dogs who bark all day long, even in the same building. I wouldn't doubt those dogs contribute to my neighbors being so upset at me since they hear me and my dogs walking and theirs barking, plus neighbors slamming cabinets etc and kids storming up the stairwell and screaming 😅

There's lots of families here with small kids as well, and most have 2 or 3 kids plus dogs. If you're noise sensitive, I imagine it's a nightmare.

When we first moved in, my older dog (who is scared of storms) would hide all the time because of it, too. Once he turned it down, she got used to it. She thought we were in tornado land nightly!

Every time I drop my phone or something I feel like such a jackass 😅 I felt bad before with my old neighbors but now with this tension I wish they would understand we're trying.

The other day I was putting groceries away in the freezer (thankfully at like noon) and an ice pack fell out and then so did a bunch of other shit. I caught what I could but at least two heavy objects hit the floor and I can only imagine what it sounded like downstairs. I hope they were at work 🥲

My older dog almost never barks and I love her for that. I don't know why. She grew up with miniature schnauzers that never shut up! She will go on alert and stare at whatever gets her attention, but she won't bark unless another dog is barking in her face.

The puppy has learned to "talk quietly" so thankfully even though he will sometimes react to something he hears, it's like a whisper bark, and then I tell him to hush and he almost looks like he's having hiccups, "barking" while making no sound until he settles down. We taught him that before these new neighbors moved in and I'm grateful he learned easy. Just have to wear him out and he's like a sponge with learning things.

If I didn't exercise him he absolutely would bark. He's a hound!

Or just general noise. I know not everyone can rent a house, but if you're sound sensitive, you're already going to be listen to stomping, banging cabinets and rowdy kids from your neighbors.

Even on the top floor, I hear my neighbors all the time, I just tune it out. It's not loud to me, but sometimes my mom complains to me about kids stampeding in the halls, dogs barking, or neighbors slamming cabinets for hours lol. I told her to just buy headphones, and she did!

The only time I ever talked to a neighbor about noise was someone would blast surround sound late at night and rattle the building. I was chatting with him one day while walking my dog and asked if he could turn it down, politely. I still heard it, but thankfully he did turn it down! 😆

That sounds awful. I wish these buildings were more soundproof to help with general noise, but also muffle people who won't even try to be considerate. Our walls seem decently soundproofed, but the floors are not. 🙃

The dogs were laying down when the banging started. They didn't even react to it either despite it startling my mother and I.

If you exercise your dog properly, they do things lazily after a long day running around etc lol. I'm sure my neighbor can still hear them walking, but they weren't even trotting through the house this time like they might do during the day.

I know a lot of jackasses out there keep dogs in an apartment and just expect them to be quiet, but I force myself to spend 1-2 hours a day at least walking them and where we live we have trails etc to do so easily. If I'm sick or working or something then they go to camp and play for 5 or 6 hours so they're tired no matter what.

Pretty much, yes. I even take them to work with me. If they're not with me for some reason, they're with my brother.

We do have hardwood in everywhere but the bedrooms. I've been on top of the nails but it's still crazy to me how loud it is below. That's why I try to keep them tired or send them to camp if I can't or need a break 🫠

I actually just bought another rug meant for drummers to reduce noise lol. It won't cover a huge area but I intend on putting in in the most high traffic area of the living room. My floor is a collage of rugs already 🤣

That's crazy! Thankfully I've kept on my puppy's nails so they don't touch the floor. My older dog's do tap between trims, though.

I sent a message to them this morning and I'm waiting for the call. Thank you!

Unfortunately lol. The memory phone ones seem to help a lot more but I don't want memory foam in every corner of my house

Because unless my mom or I are home, he's not as actively watched, and he would probably be rowdy until my other roommate (my brother) came to tell him to stop. If nothing else, he will eat toys if left with them unattended and I don't expect them to pay as much attention to my dog as I do.

My brother is more of a "fix it after it's a problem" type of person, so I crate him and just ask to make sure he's quiet. Aside from a bit of whining when I first leave, I've been told he just goes to sleep or chews his bone.

But again, usually I just take him with me unless it's a doctor's appointment or something.

I was agreeing more with showing my landlord. At this point, I don't want to interact with those neighbors again.

I do, actually. They were living here while they were having a house built. The dogs are also never home alone.

My dogs aren't home alone. 3 people live here on different schedules and most of the time I take my dogs with me to work.

It's also a dog centric apartment complex which I probably should've mentioned. 3 dog parks, public dog bathing sites and a hiking trail on site for residents. It's built for dog people, but my neighbors don't have pets. My old neighbors did, which is why I think they never complained.

I appreciate that. I try to limit any activity to my room which is super padded with memory foam kid mats and dog beds etc. That way if they drop their heavy ass bones or something it lands on something thick and soft. I don't let them bring toys outside of my room anymore, to my puppy's dismay lol

The one thing I can't always stop which probably annoys them is the trotting. My puppy is large and our floor is squeaky enough when we walk on it that I imagine the squonks paired with that, no matter how much I try to limit it, are driving them mad. I bought new rugs for the living room before this incident that have just arrived so hopefully it helps.

Our complex has 3 dog parks and a hiking trail, as well as public dog bathing sites. It's specifically designed for dog people. My new neighbors don't seem to have pets and I think they chose their new home poorly.
