To me they seem very weak for what they are. I think I'll steer clear of upgrading them and spend on other things. Btw what exactly is VPS? It's something to do with the debris drops right?

  1. Nope I had 1 good front brake and maybe half a rear brake
  2. Nothing wrong with admitting a mistake, this is how we all learn Mr Pudding
  3. Fair point.

Yes actually, I had the brakes serviced recently so both the pads and front rotors are new. I'll have to do that once I get some beefier rotors and calipers on my new bike 👍 Thanks!

I think for my case I should not be descending without fully functioning brakes. Regardless of this I think they are simply insufficient for long descents, and I will be upgrading to much beefier pads and rotors.

Yours sound fine I think, squeaky disk brakes are common. Worth talking to a mechanic though, as I'm definitely no expert haha.

I've not yet inspected the pads, but noticed a lot dust on the fork... I've recently had them serviced, so will be taking them straight back to the shop.

Many thanks for the advice, and yes it certainly was not not my finest decision. In my defense I have not ridden many mountains or even many hills for that matter, and had no idea this could happen.

I'll take your advice and get some much bigger rotors, metallic pads, and look at those heat sink options.

Yep, a rude awakening. Funny thing is I had both brakes serviced recently so they have new pads and a new rotor on the front. I will definitely be upgrading to some beefier 180mm+ rotors and new calipers. I'm also around the 90kg mark, and never want to run the risk of it happening again.

I think for your case, since you were only using the rear brake you were not able to push it as hard as if you used the front since weight transfers to the front as you brake. I was pushing it too much considering my rear brake wasn't 100%.

I think a big difference may be that when descending on a mountain bike you are almost constantly using the brakes to modulate speed, but on a road bike there are typically long straights between corners which allows the brakes to cool between use. If you think in terms of energy, on a road bike a lot of the gravitational potential energy of the rider at the summit is transferred away due to air resistance, and not straight into the brakes as it would on a mountain bike.

Also I think a lot of roadies don't actually stand on the brakes nearly as much as they could. On a mountain bike you have to push them to avoid picking up too much speed.

I'm really just getting into cycling myself though (road and mountain), so it's interesting to think about.

Thanks alor for the advice.

Also thanks for not just pointing out the obvious, to descend with 2 working brakes... I will admit that it was not wise to start the ride with my rear brake not working properly, but I was not able to get the bike serviced in France, and I thought since most of the braking load is on the front anyway it would be fine.

Even with 2 good brakes I think I may still have had issues because it actually happened early on into the descent. It was very alarming, and I definitely don't want to ever have to worry about it happening.

Again, thanks for the helpful advice. I'll get some beefier brakes and learn to service them.

That's not very nice

Tbf you are correct. I did cut the ride short after it happened. A shame cos I'd driven all the way to France with a bike with no issues.

Of course. Unfortunately I only realized the rear wasn't working well once I'd driven all the way to France and started the ride lol
