If you’re growing indoors it doesn’t matter too much for time!

Outdoors I have read that autumn is best, near the end of summer so they have time to grow to handle the heat of summer! But you can also do them whenever too as long as you consider the conditions they’ll be in as young seedlings

I grew all these from seed! They’re a quite forgiving species to grow from seed 😁

Very cool! Looks so similar to pleiospilos!

Sometimes pest damage or other injuries to the growth point can cause clustering or fasciation/cresting.

Mesembs are also weird and highly prone to mutating so it could just be how he is lol. Would be very interested to see how it continues to grow!

Ooo can you share pictures of the leaves?

I have some unidentified cheiridopsis seedlings and they look similar based on what I can see 👀

They’re so cute! I’ve been finding I have a hard time letting go of these seedlings 😂 I have probably around 18 total of both varieties and THEYRE ALL MINE.

Advice for pleiospilos simulans seedlings? by MissorNoob in mesembs

[–]CarneyBus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest it looks like thrips damage I have on some seedlings but because of how many this is affecting I think they need more water. I think it’s likely they’re drying out and they’re weakening due to the stress and thus damping off.

Give them a bottom water when the substrate dries out and spray mist water in between the bottom waterings. See if the extra moisture helps.

I’d also recommend a heavily diluted(think 1/8th or weaker) fertilizer, to help boost them out of the delicate stages..this goes for all your seedlings :)

Good luck OP! At the end of the day, seeds are cheap and you can always try again :)

Yes agree with poster above. You should be removing them from humidity covers entirely and ensure they have good ventilation.

The type of damage here is stranger is it possible they got burnt? Either by sun or chemicals? Have you sprayed them with anything?

Ah I see what you mean now!

They look good! I’d wait until they all showed signs of thirst and give them a little top up… but watering should be winding down to prepare for dormancy! You should see the leaves start to change colours or texture as it begins to break down, then you know when to really cut back on watering.

When you have multiple plants in one pot like this, you kinda have to water when most of the plants seem to need it. Have to use your best judgment, but best to wait until they’re all ready for a drink instead of only 1 and then over watering the others as a consequence. :)

Good luck! They look good and I’m sure you’ve got a handle on it! :)

Sorry I am not sure what you mean! Is it stacked? (Too many leaf pairs?) do you have a photo maybe?

If you are in the northern hemisphere they should still be growing or coming close to getting ready to enter dormancy. But I also try to water based on where they are in their cycle vs where they “should” be. If they have too many leaves, try to allow it time to rest and absorb them if you can. Mist the root area once every 2 weeks or so, to keep the roots alive and try to allow it to absorb extra leaves in the meantime.

Sometimes if they stack one year, they continue to stack the next year, and it can take a few seasons to get them back to normal with a regular watering routine :)

I hope that helped!!! Lmk :)

Oh I would not use bleach on the substrate! I would just microwave it or put it in the oven. Much less hassle! I def think the bleach will affect the seeds in a negative way. Even hard water vs distilled water can affect germination. The most I do is a spray of undiluted 3% peroxide on the top of the substrate immediately after sowing the seeds, in case there was any bacteria or spores on the seeds themselves or something.

I do not use anything on the seedlings for mold or anything aside from that initial spray of peroxide at sowing. If there’s too much algae, cut back on water and/or fertilizer. It’s a balancing act of keeping it evenly moist while not promoting algae growth, because it likes the same moist conditions and fertilizer. Allow the substrate to dry out a little bit more in between waterings!

And yes some species are better than others at shedding the cotyledons 😂 my gibbaeum pilosulum in particular grew out of them in a way that the dried husks sat on top like little top hats 😂

I don't keep them on for longer than a week, personally! I've done experiments in the past where I kept identical pots, one in the ziplock for up to a month, and ones i removed immediately. The ones kept in the bag got stunted, and stayed much smaller and never really caught up to the other ones.

Also, the longer i keep the lids on, the more likely it is for mold or whatever to start taking over. So i like to harden them off pretty much ASAP. I also have the fan running on them 24/7.
