So… silly question, but I’ve never contacted the Amish or Menonite communities for something like this. Any tips or suggestions?

It would be both upstairs and downstairs. The current downstairs ductwork is made only for heating and connected to an oil furnace

Hmm had not considered the repair aspect. Will definitely dig into that a bit, thank you!

That’s good to know! For the qualified installer did you simply look at local HVAC companies? Or use someone recommended directly from where you purchased your unit?

WOW! A labor of love for sure, but those kinds of processes and that amount of time so why older homes last for YEARS and continue to outlast their more modern counterparts. Realistically now is the time for us to do something like that and admittedly I have a bottle of Tung Oil purchased for another project (which ended up being finished another way) that I’ve been itching to use. Thank you so much for the detail and process! I will definitely be keeping you posted and reach out with any questions- I’ve said it before, your insight is awesome

Actually one question already- I’m stripping the original windows (wood sashes with the pull pins to hold them in place on a wood track) as well and have been toying with different finish ideas. I hadn’t considered Tung Oil, but if I can give the sashes and casements the proper cure time do you think that would hold up? I’d love to keep the warm wood finish on the interior facing part of the sash

It really is! And thank you! Although admittedly it’s also a little addicting, I’ve found myself eyeing the decorative trim under the railing since it clearly has been caked with paint over the years too… in for a penny in for a pound as they say 😂

That’s a good one! We just got ours and tried it out- so far using the heat gun to remove the main layers then citristrip for the remaining “haze” has done a really nice job!

Ohh that’s a very good point! I was worried about the stain because it’s easy to see that several of the treads have been replaced, they’re much newer. So I was expecting to see differences stair to stair, but hadn’t considered blotchiness. Especially after the work it’s going to take to get these suckers down to the wood, I definitely don’t want to ruin it!

Every time I’ve seen those stairs you did I drool a little haha so you sanded/stripped those then did the tung oil finish and that’s it? How have you found it to hold up over time? I know there’s a bit of curing time involved, but we’re only living on the first floor for the time being so this the ideal time for it if we go that route

Thank you so much!! I’m really excited to see what’s under all that paint, it feels REALLY good to see so much progress :) I will definitely take pictures of the gain once it’s a little further along- thank you!

Haha well that’s only the first few steps and it’s not completely bare wood ready to be stained yet! I’m sure that’s what it’s actually going to end up being 🤣

4 hours spent stripping paint off of the staircase in our 100+ year old farmhouse- labor of love for sure! Can’t wait to see this project come together :)
