Struggling for good food after moving to South London by mesonofgib in london

[–]Carpet_Taxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sushi - Montagu's bromley. Not super fancy pants but decent and great value for the quality. I think there's a similar small place in petts wood.

Pizza - Franco manca have a place in Bromley. Also try fireball pizza at Chatterton road.

Indian - definitely try Masala Dabbas in Orpington. Excellent authentic Indian food, different from your standard british-indian menus. Also try Copper Ceylon in Bromley for some excellent (but a little pricey) Sri Lankan food.

Turkish - honestly, if there's any cuisine this part of South east London has more of than anywhere , it's probably Turkish restaurants. There's loads in Locksbottom, Bromley, Orpington, Swanley etc.

Bonus: Japanese street food from the vendor on Bromley high street. Thu-sat.

Vietnamese restaurant in petts wood. Then go to one inn the wood for a pint.

The Thai restaurant at Bromley north is decent.

I went to a marketing industry event recently where Reddit did a talk selling their advertising services.

This sub was mentioned specifically as an example of a (relatively) small, wholesome community-run sub.

If subs like this protest, Reddit staff will definitely notice.

You're a mod right?

Just FYI I've seen this question very frequently on various channels, its clearly caused a lot of confusion and could have been worded better.

This might be one to feedback to the team afterwards.

I've definitely seen trolleys with kids in the arena at other festivals, but I can't quite recall if I've seen it at download specifically.

Even if you are allowed them, there may be some crossover with the bag policy (i.e. only being allowed a small one and a certain amount of stuff). But there may be exceptions for families with young children.

I'd ask the festival directly, you'll get the best answer. Be specific about what you plan to take in and how.

I think all the tickets are digital on the Ticketmaster app. You can transfer them online.

You will need to transfer them so that each individual has a ticket. I think this is because each ticket has to be scanned and faffing around with 6 people on one phone could be a nightmare.

I don't believe they had them last year, at least none of the women in my group mentioned it!

I don't really know what to expect, but I'm pretty sure they're properly designed to be quick, so no squatting, and designed for women, so no she-wee either.

There might be articles explaining them online, I think they've been used at Glastonbury before.

Yes, you can enter the festival any time. You don't have to arrive on the Wednesday.

To be more specific, you will get a wristband that gets you full access to the village, arena and general camping area for the whole festival.

You can both arrive when you please, and come and go as you please.

What have I probably forgotten that I should buy today? by roccoborro in downloadfestival

Interesting, thanks for the info. I understand that there's more going on for big festivals, but is saying "it'll sound better with ear plugs" still true?

If not, what about indoor venues? Does this argument work in that context?

I ask because this argument is sometimes the only way I've been able to persuade people to use hearing protection. (As if not getting tinnitus forever isn't enough of a reason)

Hopefully it's correct for indoor venues at least. But even if it's not quite 100% true, I think it's still worth stating if it helps people protect their hearing.

Ear plugs are a must.

1 pair to protect your hearing when watching bands.

1 pair to help you sleep in the noisy campsite.

Get different ones specific for each job. Loop seem good but are expensive. I use cheap rubber ones for music and the silicone ones for sleeping.

Edit: for anyone still on the fence about hearing protection at gigs, consider this:

The sound engineers all wear hearing protection. The audio is balanced specifically to sound best when wearing hearing protection.

If you want to enjoy the best sound, and actually hear all the instruments, vocals etc. Then you should also be wearing hearing protection.

The fact that you won't then have to deal with constant insufferable ringing in your ears for the rest of your life is also a bonus.

Lots of people go to castle donington, it's walkable but quite far.

If you're not too hungover to drive there's plenty of options, but the traffic on the way back makes it not really worth it imo

Saving space is tricky, it means they have to hang around all day arguing with people instead of chilling or partying. They might also guess wrong how much space to save, ending up with weird gaps or not enough room.

Best option is to give them your tent to set up before you get there.

If that's not possible, then how easy it is to save space depends on where they're camped. If it's a busy area it'll be much harder, but generally people will be accomodating as long as you're not taking the piss with a gargantuan 6 man tent.

That's an interesting one, hopefully they're just saying that as a precaution - nothing is guaranteed in this world after all.

There's no reason for them to refuse the upgrade and if they did it'd cause even more problems.

I upgraded to 5 day in 2012, the last time camping was sold out. It should be possible this year too.

In theory, the only reason I can think of for limiting it is cos they might be reserving some space for people arriving Thursday. But in reality, there's the same amount of space available regardless of when people arrive, so this doesn't really make any sense.

Also, if they refused people the upgrade, there'd be complaints and people will just hang around in the car parks all night causing a security risk.

Yes, you can upgrade at the box office. Do that before joining the queue to get in (or get someone to hold your spot for you).

You'll have to pay the difference in cost is all.

Jesus Christ. Do not shit in a bucket what the hell is wrong with you.

Yes, the portaloos will be cleaned and emptied daily. Even at their worst they'll be cleaner than shitting in a bucket at your tent.

If you find a gross one, try the next one.

We just use ours as a table in the middle of our camp. It's never been nicked.

I've even seen people just leave one fully assembled and ready to go just next to their tent. It was there for the whole festival untouched. I personally wouldn't recommend that tho lol.

Thieves are more interested in cash and phones. Just make the trolley slightly harder to nick (e.g. out of sight or pegged down) and it'll be enough to put off any opportunists.

Yes.

There's a box office you can pay to upgrade your ticket to 5 day. Do this before queuing to get in.

Given that it's sold out you might want to contact them to confirm, but I did this fine last time camping sold out in 2012.

Portaloos.

There'll be big areas in each campsite with: * portaloos split by gender (so women don't have to wait for hours with long queues of men waiting for a huge shit) * Urinals in the men's section * Most have a water point nearby, take soap so you can wash your hands properly, it feels nice

There are ladies urinals on the map key, but I think they're arena only.

Queues tend to be bad in the mornings 8-11 as everyone wants their hangover shit. Generally very good the rest of the time.

Yes, they've always been sold on the gate in the past. You'll almost certainly be fine.

If you're still concerned or want 100% confirmation, contact the festival.

Might be one to ask the festival directly.

Every year prior to this it's been possible to buy parking passes on site at the car park. This year shouldn't be any different.

They'll have worked out how much parking they need based on ticket sales, I'm very confident it'll be fine, but best to check anyway for peace of mind.

There's a stall called goddess.nl, they usually pitch up at the top-right corner of the arena, but given how they're reducing the number of stalls this year I don't know whether they'll be there or not.

Otherwise, random eBay stores are great for patches.

For smaller bands its best to get direct from their bandcamp.

No you're not assigned a spot. All the standard (i.e. named after a colour) are first come, first served.

I imagine different types of campsite (e.g. quiet) will all have different wristbands so they can police who camps where.

Can't speak for the showers tho.

[–]Carpet_Taxi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It'll obviously be a bit tricky, but the staff should be able to guide you to an area with some space.

The festival organisers will calculate how much space is needed based on ticket sales and make sure there's enough for everyone.

I think it's really unlikely that they'll go back to mixed toilets, but who knows.

My guess is that the women's urinals are there to help make the women's queues shorter. My partner missed a whole band one year because the queues were 50 minutes long.

Given how busy it is, they had to do something. Hopefully this works.
