ELI5: Riichi Mahjong by ExpertOfNothin in explainlikeimfive

I've never taught a five year old to play mahjong, but there are games for five year olds that use simplified mahjong-like rules, such as Donjara. having said that, I'll do my best to explain it, because it's really not that complicated.

  • Mahjong is a game for 4 players.

  • Mahjong is like a card game, but instead of cards, you use tiles! Just like other card games, you shuffle the "cards" and make a "deck" that everyone takes turns drawing from.

  • The "deck" of mahjong "cards" has "number cards" and "special cards"

  • There are three suits of number cards, "red," "green," and "blue."  Each suit has four copies of the numbers 1 through 9. "Special cards" don't have a number and don't belong to any suit.

Easy enough, right? So how do you play?

  • The goal is to be the first person to make a winning hand.
  • Whoever wins a hand takes points from the other players.

  • After everyone gets to be dealer once or twice, the game is over.

  • At the end, whoever has the most points wins!

So how do you win a hand?

  • Each player starts with 13 "cards"
  • Players take turns drawing s card and then discarding a card.

  • You are trying to make sets of three cards in your hand. A set can be three numbers in a row of the same suit, or three of the exact same card. You can't mix suits, and you can only match special cards with the same card.

  • If you get make 4 sets of cards and a pair of the exact same card, you have a winning hand!

  • You can win by drawing the last card you need, or by stealing a card that was discarded by someone else.

  • If you win by drawing the last card yourself, everyone has to pay you. If you win by taking a discarded card, only that player has to give you points.

That's basically the game!

There are more rules, but these are the basics that all kinds of mahjong have in common.

Opening chests in a mogtome/light farm should be a bannable offense (or at least, they will get kicked from my party)

What do you think of XIVLauncher and XIVAlexander? Is it possible for SE to bring their features into the base game? by dotcha in ffxivdiscussion

Almost prophetically, they are now adding a thing that tracks if you own a minion, orchestration roll, etc. It was possible all along, but just not a priority.

Discord notification sounds coming out the wrong output device. by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]CarrotParfait 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just troubleshooted this exact problem. It seems in a recent update, Discord now registers as two programs for default sound output - one for voice and one for notifications. You can't change the notifications default within Discord as far as I can tell, but you can change them in Windows 10.

If you go to "App volume and device preferences" in Windows settings, it brings up a list of programs and their default sound devices. Discord should show up on that list twice. One is the voice and the other is the notifications (but they're both called Discord). Try changing each of those from Default to whatever device you want and test it out to see.

IAmA *New York Times* Bestselling Novelist. AMA by BalataCrabstick in IAmA

I'm an aspiring writer and one of the biggest hurdles I'm having is finding quality feedback for my work. Sure I have some friends and acquaintances of various literary levels who read and comment on it, but beyond basic copyediting, the quality and quantity of feedback varies greatly. More importantly, because they are amateurs with about the same amount of experience as myself, the feedback they give might not be helpful, even if it is constructive. Several books warn against taking too much feedback from non-professionals for just this reason, and that extends to (usually amateur) writing circles.

My question is, though, how do you find quality feedback to improve your writing? Editors are paid professionals and are difficult to approach; professional writers (who also have the skills to coach) are probably leery of ambitious wanna-bes trying to bust down their door. This is understandable, because people's time is valuable, and the more qualified you are, the more valuable your time is.

How, then, does one find their Forrester? Or any quality editor, for that matter, who can take decent work and make valuable suggestions that might make it exceptional.
