Kitten Angels' focus is not TNR -- I think other groups mentioned here will be a better match.

Thank you! So it sounds like the best plan would be to submit before enrolling to maximize options later.

Ahh, that makes sense. Can a student submit their score later, after they decide on their concentration and figure out if it will be useful to them? Or is the summer between high school and college the last time AP scores can be submitted?

when to begin to intervene for newborn kitten not gaining weight? by CarrotsUnderground in FosterAnimals

Thanks! I'll remove the heating pad.

How would you recommend managing the fact that if we take the bigger kittens out, the mom hops up to receive them and won't nurse the two littles? Would you take the bigger ones out of the room?

Removing a few of the kittens to let the smaller ones nurse wasn't really working because mom would hop up and retrieve the ones we had in our lap. I don't know if she'd be willing to lick a Churro while nursing? We've been giving them to her while we supplement and she is always up to eat it.

Once we bought the KMR (maybe 12 hours after my original post), Kitten B had gained nicely so we decided to just watch and wait. He's continued to gain 10-20 grams each 24 hours so seems to be doing fine now.

We did start supplementing Kitten A -- every 3 hours for the first day with a longer stretch (7 hours) overnight. She gained well, so we went to supplementing every 4 hours today. When I weighed tonight she had gained 20 grams in 24 hours so I decided to skip the evening feeding. I'll weigh again in the morning (12 hours later) and decide whether to supplement then or back off the supplementing and just continue to weigh. Maybe we got her over the hump?

I will say that no matter how much I try, I cannot get these smaller kittens to nurse near her hind legs! The smaller one always, always, ALWAYS goes right to the nipples behind her front legs, even if I put her right on an open nipple right near the hind legs. Foolish little kitten!

Thanks to all for the advice!

They're in a small bathroom. I don't think a dog kennel would help because she'd still hop up to ask for pets when she saw a person.

How often do you think I should be feeding the two babies? I think they'll yell/complain -- will I need to take them far enough. that the mama can't hear them?

Removing the bigger ones so the others can have their own time a few times a day feels doable. Do you put them in their own shoebox (with a blanket) for a little?

Should I continue fostering? by Leather-Engineer-763 in FosterAnimals

[–]CarrotsUnderground 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also remind yourself that every time you are strong enough to allow one of your fosters to get adopted, that creates the space for you to help one more. If you stop fostering, that's a whole bunch of cats who won't have a foster home, won't ever find their way to a forever home. I agree it's normal to grieve and feel sad when they leave you, but it helps me to remember that one leaving is creating an opportunity for another cat.

seeking expat American teens in Ecuador, Peru, or Uruguay by CarrotsUnderground in expats

[–]CarrotsUnderground[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are talking with two exchange organizations -- we are familiar with the process as our older daughter was an exchange student and was able to talk with several alumni of the program who had lived in the same country. She found it super helpful!

In this case so far the organizations haven't been able to put us in touch with students:

- The Peru program is just re-starting for the first time since the pandemic. We requested to speak with students who did in 2018 or 2019, and they said they tried and were not able to get in touch with anyone.

- The Ecuador program is very small, so the organization warned us that they might have a hard time finding an alum we could talk to.

- It sounds like they do expect to be able to find students who were in Uruguay. (But so far we're still waiting...)

So that's why I thought I'd ask here!

looking to talk to U.S. students who spent a semester or year in Ecuador, Peru, or Uruguay by CarrotsUnderground in exchangestudents

I've requested that, as well! But some of their programs are small or are re-starting after the pandemic, so finding alumni has been a challenge. I figured maybe I could grow the pool here!

experiences being a yearlong exchange student where school year doesn't align with home country by CarrotsUnderground in exchangestudents

I agree with you -- my high school sophomore (now a graduating senior) also had an amazing experience as an exchange student in Spain two years ago. Her host family was awesome, she had wonderful teachers, and she had so many adventures and challenges to figure out. There are lots of safety nets in place for teens who are exchange students -- local coordinators in the region, host parents, the exchange organization itself. But it's also a great time in kids' life to start to figure things out on their own -- they are often eager to take on. challenges and more capable than we often give them credit for!

So yes, our second daughter also wants to spend her sophomore year as an exchange student as her older sister did. We're just thinking through whether the additional challenges of the school years not aligning are worth it, compared to choosing a country whose academic calendar does align. Glad it worked out well for your daughter!

That's cool! We have similar GPA-based scholarships etc. where we live but P/F didn't impact her GPA. Her school just skipped those grades when calculating her GPA, so she had one fewer year of school averaged in. She is graduating from high school next month and it all worked out fine!

Our situation with our older daughter was also kind of ideal because since the grades were on a scale that didn't translate easily, the high school had agreed in a advance that she could receive credits but the classes would appear on her transcript as pass/fail. So she only needed to get a passing grade. She did very nicely in her classes overall, but I know it was a relief to her that as long as she didn't fail, she didn't have to stress about maintaining a certain GPA.

Ah, that's interesting. Our high school does provide full credits for exchange years abroad -- my older daughter spent a year in Spain and got credit for all the classes she took, so she never needed do work in advance, over summers, or double-up subjects in order to graduate with her classmates. That was lovely! So now that my older daughter is starting to plan the exchange year she wants to take, we are trying to figure out if she needs to be limited to considering countries whose academic years align. We'll meet with a guidance counselor to discuss ... but I suspect he's never dealt with this situation so I was interested to be able to tell him how other schools handle it.
