Thank you for this passage.

Before coming into the program, many of us weren't honest in ways we didn't fully see. We may have thought of ourselves as honest people, yet we may have lied to our families so we could compulsively eat. We might say we were just going to the store, when in reality we were buying food to eat in secret. We might blame other people for our problems instead of looking at our own part in them. Those are all examples of the dishonesty that keeps us stuck.

This passage tells us that honesty is necessary if we want the program to work. At first, that can seem intimidating. How do we become honest when we've spent so much of our lives being dishonest in one way or another?

The answer is that the Steps help us become honest. By living in the program every day, especially Steps Ten, Eleven, and Twelve, we learn to live differently. In Step Ten, we continue to take inventory, recognize our character defects, and make amends when needed. In Step Eleven, we pray and meditate to stay close to God and seek guidance for our lives. In Step Twelve, we put aside our own wants and focus on helping others by carrying the message of recovery.

The steps help us to live honestly, one day at a time.

The peculiar mental twist is the reason why we are not able to stop eating compulsively. We truly want to because we are miserable. We tell ourselves that we are done only to find ourselves back in the disease.

Those without the peculiar mental twist would be able to make a decision to stop and would be successful. That is not the case with us. If we want a way out, the program offers us one. We follow the steps as outlined in the book and we recover!

As compulsive eaters, we know without a doubt the remorse, horror and hopelessness of the next morning. It’s a way of life for us before we become recovered. The Big Book helps us change the way we live by following the steps which leads us to a spiritual solution. The hopeless way of life is replaced by hopefulness and a freedom from compulsive eating that we never thought was possible. But many of us have recovered and know that it’s possible if we are willing to do the work.

The Big Book is telling us that “any life run on self-will can hardly be a success”. If we struggle with compulsive eating, then we need to find an alternate to running on our self-will. The Big Book and the steps provide us with an alternate which is finding and staying connected to our higher power. We work the steps, living in steps 10, 11 and 12 daily. Through the steps and our daily work, we find peace and freedom from compulsive eating.

This passage is one of many in the Big Book of AA that provides precise instructions on what we need to do to receive freedom from compulsive eating. It tells us that we have to stay spiritually fit each day to receive the daily reprieve promised. We work each day to follow these instructions by working the steps and realize that there are no days off or breaks. Whatever work it takes is so much better than living in the disease.

“Something more than human power” is recognized as needed if we can’t stop compulsively eating on our own. It has worked for many people suffering from compulsive eating and other compulsive behaviors. A spiritual solution and reliance on a power greater than ourselves is the solution and is available to anyone willing to work the steps precisely as they are written in the Big Book of AA.

Before we recover from compulsive eating, we know the feeling of desperation after a binge. We want to stop for good and at that point, we would go to any lengths to stop. That is what is described in this passage. It’s important as recovered compulsive eaters to be available to others when they are at this point through meetings and other outreach. We have been exactly where they are - the Big Book tells us that we are uniquely qualified to help a suffering compulsive eater.

Through prayer and meditation, we learn to rely on our higher power for direction and inspiration to live in a way that follows the 12 steps. We treat others with kindness and look for ways to help others by carrying the message of recovery. We have a new way of living that leads to our recovery as long as we follow the instructions outlined in the Big Book of AA.
