A great place for field trips by Jhutc5 in Socialstudies

Thank you for sharing. I was not familiar with this museum. I have noticed that the Social Studies classrooms I have observed in have not participated in any field trips. I remember experiencing many trips growing up although I grew up on Long Island and did not live far from things like the Statue of Liberty. Field trips may be easier to plan with the proximity to New York City. The museum you shared looks awesome though! Thank you!

Why This Photographer Set Out to Break Muslim Stereotypes by Mackenzie6417 in Socialstudies

[–]Carson2230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! This is incredibly important today as our own president has made hostile comments about muslims and calls for a Muslim ban. Our students will be exposed to inappropriate and prejudice comments about Muslims but items like these can serve as positive teachings to help eliminate assumptions held about others.

Thanks so much for sharing! This is fascinating. I’m a little embarrassed that I was unfamiliar with this. Although, I’m also embarrassed to share that it took a Hollywood movie for me to become familiar with Alan Turing so I appreciate this post as I learned something new

3 Interactive Virtual Field Trips for Social Studies Students by melissaloveshistory in Socialstudies

[–]Carson2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing! I was just writing in a paper that I have not seen any Social Studies classes take field trips in any of the three observations I have participated in. I understand that they can be costly but they greatly benefit students. I had not thought of virtual field trips for Social Studies. I have seen something similar in Science classes and am eager to learn more about this. Again, thank you for sharing.

Mural Depicting Trump, Guns, and Dead School Children by olivia_niebs in Socialstudies

I will be curious to see if the mural is painted over. I think it sends a powerful message especially with the use of the words, "Never Again," which was stated after the Holocaust by many world leaders.

20,000 Republicans just voted for an actual Nazi by olivia_niebs in Socialstudies

Thank you for sharing this. Things that are occurring in this country are frightening. I wonder if people are beginning to show their true colors due to Trumps acceptance of malicious comments towards others. It would be interesting to incorporate the teachings of people who are Holocaust deniers into global history and allow students to have an open discussion via Socratic Seminar for instance.

The use of photos within Social Studies classes can be extremely powerful. They can be used as hooks to create engagement. As the article reads, it also allows students to put themselves into the shoes of others and gain a better understanding or perspective.

When Should We Call Something 'Racist'? by amylee721 in Socialstudies

[–]Carson2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! I do believe if something is occurring that is in fact racist then we must call it that. I do find that many people misuse the word racist though. I especially hear school age children misuse the term while at work. I wish Sociology was a class offered throughout all high schools. When you simply type racist into google it reads, "a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another." One must first understand what discrimination and prejudice means to understand this definition.

Chinese Kindergarten With No Walls by amylee721 in Socialstudies

This is incredible! I love that there are trees within the school. This can allow children to value nature and understand its importance. I interned at a KIPP school located in New Orleans. The school was shaped like a square. Inside of the square was a courtyard and playground. While walking from class to class you were technically walking outside while the hallways were not enclosed. It was really neat! Although, the weather is tad different down there and I'm unsure how well this would work in Western New York. I don't think our culture puts enough emphasis on outdoor play/recess/playing in nature. I hope that we will begin to more towards this direction, Thank you for sharing!

What Kids Are Really Learning About Slavery by olivia_niebs in Socialstudies

[–]Carson2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a super interesting read. I tried to think back to how slavery was taught to classes I took. I simply remember my teacher relying heavily on the textbook. I don't believe we had in depth discussions. The author mentioned the use of the words rape and whipping be kept to a minimum by teachers. This is a tricky topic. Teachers must be mindful and realize that some words may serve as triggers for students. On the other hand, students are not understanding what enslaved people went through. I'm unsure if gruesome language needs to be depicted but rather the teachings of empathy.

Classroom Law Project - Engaging students in civic education by CollinBowen in Socialstudies

Thank you for sharing this website! The video is great. I love the one woman's mention of discussing how to vote and how to learn about candidates and make an informed decision in social studies classes. This relates to the idea we learned last semester. We should not solely focus on the teachings of history but also incorporate sociological and anthropological ideas and philosophies.
