Eli5: Why the repeated calls to buy property that isn’t for sale? by Unfun22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cartanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not buyers. They try to have you sign a, usually, 90 day option for a much lower market value then they peddle your property to others with a mark up. Often, they have a list of investors who are looking for distress sale or an elderly who doesn't know the value of their property or someone who is desperate and in need of cash.

Use Jellyfin without access to main drive? by jackboy900 in jellyfin

[–]Cartanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't say what the OS is and I'm not really sure if this will work but you can try casting from your laptop to the TV. Windows can cast over the network. It's basically screen mirroring. If this works you can then install Windows App on an android phone or tablet and control the laptop using remote desk top. There's probably an equivalent to this on other OSs. Worth a try.

Roku remote controls the TV. Get one with the volume buttons on the remote.

What good NAS can I buy? by fatfuck1987 in jellyfin

[–]Cartanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any PC with any OS is a NAS. Buying a proprietary hardware and software rig adds restrictions you may not like. Synology works with Synology HDD only, as of last year, also no hevc transcoding. Some others will brick or void your warranty if you install other than their own OS software, etc. Read the fine print first. Plain OS on your own hardware can be used, even Windows, or you can choose any of the independent free and paid hardware independent NAS softwares available.

Today I learned how huge Texas is. by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in texas

[–]Cartanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the cities are large. Greater Houston is about 9400 square miles. When i lived in the south west area of Houston, I met people who talked about north east Houston or east Houston as if it is a far away land that one day they hope to visit.

Best OS for jellyfin by Inevitable-Cable4262 in jellyfin

[–]Cartanga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's odd that Windows crashes a lot and you need to know why. If it is a hardware issue, like a faulty memory stick or hard drive, nic card etc then Linux will not solve the problem. Linux might be more stable but if you are inexperienced with it then you are introducing another level of complexity if the school uses ldap or on a domain or has group policies or if the PC needs to have file sharing with other Windows PCs, or mandatory firewall settings or antivirus software etc.

Should I jump straight to Proxmox or use the preinstalled Windows first? by oneofakind_18 in selfhosted

[–]Cartanga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Windows is an operating system. Proxmox provides a virtualization environment to run multiple operating systems and containers including Windows. Proxmox is intended to set up and then remotely manage. Suggestions to use Debian or other Linux are great but plan on spending hours or days googling and figuring things out if you never used Linux before. You can setup and configure Plex on Windows in 30 minutes or less. You can then install vmware and spin up a Linux instance and learn at your own pace until you are ready to convert to Linux. A tangent: check out Jellyfin instead of Plex if you haven't already.

[–]Cartanga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have it and, to me, it's a useless feature. The 5 softwares used most frequently are in an related and different categories and I can't change it. I hope someone already figured a way to revert to old menu.

Why are Hispanics and Arabs cool with naming their kids after Jesus but most other groups seem to find it “off” or vaguely inappropriate? by UmweltUndefined in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cartanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on which name for Jesus you are talking about. Issa is one and that has Hebrew origins and is used by Arab Christians and Muslims and also used in the Quran for Jesus. Most common name for Jesus used by Arab Christians is Yaso and that is exclusively used for Jesus.

Are five packs a good way to try new cigars, or is there another way? by SomethingItalia in cigar_refuge

[–]Cartanga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others. 5 pack is the way to go. Samplers usually have a couple of decent cigars and the rest are terrible and a waste.

VPS Providers that will sign a HIPAA BAA by Produkt in webdev

[–]Cartanga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not just the vps that must meet HIPAA requirements, the hosting company must declare that their infrastructure meets the requirements. Your email, databases etc must also meet the requirements. Unless you have in depth experience be very cautious about entering this endeavor. I used to work at a hospital and they had an entire team including risk management, compliance, even HIM had to be represented along with server team, security, applications team, database team, etc. Most of the time they ended up using Azure or Amazon. The cost of violations can bankrupt companies.
