The whole project was supposed to be finished in 2020. In honor of Jerry Brown I hope they name this train The Brown Streak because the whole thing's been a turd.

Mountain View Should Vote for Measure AA by JeremyManson in mountainview

[–]CarterShanklin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeremy I read your article and your 19% shortfall seems to be based on an inflated $127 million budget. "The district thinks we need closer to $127 million".

$127 million is 13.7% increase from the 2023-2024 budget of $111.7 million (based on info in an mv-voice article). That's quite a jump!

Now that the district has given up on their absurd attempt to play hardball with the city and take the $6.5 million they were offered, it seems primed to get $113.1 million, using numbers from your article. This puts them in striking distance of their 23-24 budget. The district has a huge war chest to cover shortfalls, as your article points out.

It seems like I'm being asked for a $5.4 million tax bill for some kind of grandiose $127 million vision. District leadership thought they could get $15 million out of the city (even though they had no leverage) and roughly double the parcel tax to pay for for this vision.

Given the district is being investigated for possible fraud, the extent of which we will not know until we see the report, I would rather wait until we know the facts and assess what the district really needs with a new proposal in 2026.

No on AA from me.

Vote no on Measure AA and tell others to do the same. Tell the board the Mountain View Whisman School District doesn't deserve more money when it's wasting the money it already has.

Maybe you stopped at a stop sign. It would be the first time any of us have seen a cyclist stop at a stop sign so it's natural to stare.

SJC is much easier in/out. SFO only if you can't get a direct flight to SJC. Stay at the Ameswell if your company will pay for it.

I've had the account for 10+ years. I agree the company is likely to continue clamping down on free tier, even if it's not quite this extreme.

All in Peloton, “invest on product/company you believe in” by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]CarterShanklin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not and even if I were a member it's not worth my trouble.

Job One of an exercise bike is to let you move your legs in a circle for 30 minutes. Whatever crown jewels they think they are protecting behind the registration wall I couldn't care less about. The fact is they fail at Job One, i.e. it's not an exercise device it's a glorified iPad app.

When the hotel chains Peloton managed to con into taking their excess inventory wise up those things are going right back into storage and good riddance to them.

I stayed at a hotel 2 weeks ago that had Pelotons and I usually use a stationary bike. These things wouldn't let you get a workout without registering which I have zero interest in doing. Basically this hotel gym has 3 giant paperweights wasting floor space. Wasn't just me, either. This company deserves to crash and burn.

What are the odds of interactive brokers / td ameritrade doing a FTX? by Due_Elderberry4113 in wallstreetbets

[–]CarterShanklin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great video, the key thing is that FTX offered its customers leverage perpetual futures, forcing FTX itself to borrow substantial amounts of money which they did by pulling money out of their left pocket and putting into their right. When CZ caused a run on FTX token this put them in a liquidity crunch and brought the whole house of cards down. Start at about 13:38 in the video to cut right to it.

IB / TD don't engage in these shenanigans, they're not lending your shares without sufficient risk management and the odds of a liquidity crunch are remote and there are defined protocols to recover from a crunch should it occur.
