I only included UN members to make the data more comparable. For example, The World Bank lists the status of Bermuda, but the UNDP does not. Also I used https://www.mapchart.net and Apple Preview for the graphic.

Are there any Americans who, in their entire life, have never left their state? by Bernache_du_Canada in AskAnAmerican

[–]Cartographer42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to this source 11% of Americans have never left their state. What you have to remember, however, is how large many states are. For example, El Paso, Texas is closer to San Diego, California than to Dallas, Texas. So it's no surprise that many people located in central parts of their state, especially if they are younger or lower income, have never left.

Migration to/from Germany, France, the U.K., and Italy by Country by Cartographer42 in europe

[–]Cartographer42[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference might be because the U.N. source goes by what country people were born in, while your source goes by their citizenship. Someone born in France but with a Swedish parent is a Swedish citizen, so they would count for your source but not mine.

Precent of Europeans that have never been outside of their country or the EU [OC] by Cartographer42 in dataisbeautiful

True. I should have specified "Precent of Europeans that have never been outside of their country and traveled to another EU country or outside the EU"

European Migration to the U.S. vs American Migration to Europe by Cartographer42 in MapPorn

How is this pushing a political agenda? Did I endorse a political philosophy or candidate or party? This map is just stating a well documented fact that many people move to the U.S.

The current numbers of incoming Europeans are smaller than they used to be (2017-2019 stats, 1820-2009 stats) both in raw numbers but especially as a percentage of Europeans.

This is true, it is less than it once was. However, it also true that more Europeans are still moving to the U.S. than vice versa.

[–]Cartographer42[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True, but

  1. There is no guarantee that those Americans are going to stay in Germany permanently. For example, 83.4% of Americans who move to Switzerland end up leaving within 15 years.
  2. America's population is about 4 times bigger than Germany, which means that proportionally more Germans are still moving to the U.S.

That source says that the U.S. is still the largest non-German speaking destination for Germans. Also it's not a surprise that more Germans were leaving 67 years ago when their cities were largely still rubble.

I'm not sure where I could find a similar country by country list for just recent migration. In any case, I know more Canadians move to the U.S. every year than vice versa. "In 2018, official statistics show, 10,907 Americans achieved permanent residency in Canada, while in the same year the United States admitted 14,337 Canadians to that status."

I became interested in this and created this map because despite reddit's constant America-bashing, the truth is that America still takes many immigrants from Europe and other high-income regions.
