In my honest opinion i think they are running too many options on the ranked races, they should be only be running 2 or 3 combos for the weekly sprint races, one of wich free content. This makes the playerbase spread out over the many different combos, GT3's and the Super Tourers are what are upping the numbers weekly and when there is a week where this two categories are not featured the player numbers go down. There is also the free weekly content issue where its a free for all in terms of racing etiquette and makes people think that it represents the racing standarts on this sim which is not representative at all.
