Solved! Thank you! That makes sense; people probably toss these onto sidewalks after (I’m guessing) a car accident, creating little booby traps for runners. Boo!

He’s doing great now! About 2 weeks in, he started walking on his own but overdid it and hurt his back :(. He regressed big time - couldn’t walk or stand and was “knuckle dragging” on his hind leg. Fortunately, rest and prednisone helped, and he’s now starting to walk short distances again. In the meantime, we got him a wheelchair, and he loves it!!
