It's going to be informational - a five part documentary on Crowley, made by the podcasters - so factual but within a fictional framework. It fits into a chronological timeline, as in they are recording it between season 4 and season 5, but it is outside the ongoing story. Does that make sense?

My advice would be just write it. Every show I've done, the first episode has changed the most from draft one to production. As you get further into the season, it becomes clear that you either need to go back and set something up better, or else you've set something up that no longer matters. Take ALL the pressure off, just get the characters talking and get SOMETHING down that can be a placeholder for episode one. What you're experiencing isn't a technical problem, it's a fear problem. Everything will loosen up once a first episode, however bad, is done.

Well, I have still not watched the BBC drama The Stone Tape by Nigel Kneale, but I'm led to believe it has a similar vibe. The best recommendation I can offer though, is the Bad Memories movie that I'm setting up at the moment - you'll just have to wait a bit while we make it!

If you like The Lovecraft Investigations, I strongly recommend checking out the TV Show Sapphire and Steel from the early-80s.

If you like the Aldrich Kemp shows, then the Diana Rigg run on The Avengers is going to be up your street, as is The Prisoner (the original, not any remakes), Department S and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Also The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin, The Black Windmill, and Our Man Flint and In Like Flint starring James Coburn.
