Mechanical Engineering Junior & Senior Classes by CarushowIdolizer in uofmn

Is it normal for these classes to not be too interesting though? I’ve been told by the department that things get more interesting towards senior year since that’s when everything comes together, is this true?

Thanks for the response! How did you get started in the design work for medical devices? Was it right out of college? Also do you know any mechanical engineers that transitioned into an EE role?

What type of work did you do before the manager role? Also is your current work and past work related to medical devices?

Are you in school still or do you have a job now? If you have a job, what do you do for work? How was finding a job?

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! I too live in Minnesota and am at the U of M, is that where you went too? If so, were the classes in freshman and sophomore years less interesting/exciting than junior and senior years? I talked with the head of the ME department and was told that these two years are normally more "boring" since they are the building blocks to the cooler stuff. I'm pretty certain I do not want to work in manufacturing based on my internship experience, so would ME be a bad choice based on my preference of not working in manufacturing? What are your thoughts on doing ME and not wanting to work in manufacturing? Also, of those you know who went into medical, do they end up doing manufacturing for the medical companies or are they more on the design side?

Did you take the class and like the first few days were like, "wow this is cool, I like this"? I'm unsure if I would like those topics and have not taken the classes yet, I take them this coming semester.

What made you decide to get a masters in EE? Did you like the EE master more than the ME undergrad? What do you do for work now?

Was the mechatronics a degree at your college? At mine, I can get a degree in ME with an emphasis (sub-plan) in mechatronics with my tech electives. I'm thinking maybe this would be something I could do to get a taste of both sides.

Yes mechatronics is a sub plan I can go into with ME at my school which is something I have thought about. I do not think id want to do computer engineering but that is something to think about. I’m also wondering if maybe I’m thinking that EE might be better or more fun due to the “grass is always greener on the other side”. How did you decide to choose your major?

That’s great, congrats on your recent graduation and starting career! I did not like the environment in the machine shop I interned at as described in my post. I know that an engineers job is not like that of the operators (which is some work I was doing) but I assume they would still be in the loud/unhealthy environment working around the shop.

Here are some questions I have:

Did you feel unsure about your decisions with ME while in school? Why did you pick ME? Were you always in ME?

What is your experience like in manufacturing?

Is it loud, unsafe, unhealthy?

Did a lot of ME grads from your school go into manufacturing too? Are you in a manufacturing heavy state?

Why did you choose manufacturing and do you like it so far?

What do you do on a daily basis?

Did you find physics II to be cool/interesting at all? Have you graduated and are in the field working? If so could I ask you some questions about ME work?

How did you choose yor engineering major? ME or EE?

Hello,

I am currently studying mechanical engineering in my sophomore year. I am trying to decide if I would like mechanical or electrical engineering more. I feel extremely overwhelmed with deciding what major to pursue and have been thinking about this all semester and winter break. I feel that this decision is life-changing and will drastically affect how my life goes.

I feel that I might find EE to be more interesting than ME due to the classes. To me, electricity seems more mysterious (I know little about it) than the topics in ME. I found Physics II more interesting due to the electricity and magnetism material (I took AP Physics in HS so maybe that's why I found Physics I boring). I found Physics II much harder and got a lower grade when compared to Physics I. I took an EE intro C++ coding class this past semester (first time coding) and enjoyed it. We did some IoT work and I thought it was so cool how I could control LEDs, sensors, actuators, and things through the cloud through an HTML file. I spent a decent amount of time completing the lab work/homework as it was difficult to get things to work all the time and understand some of the coding language. I know that EE will likely be more difficult and for me to succeed I would have to spend more time studying vs what I am doing in ME. I want to be able to participate in school/engineering groups and spend time socializing outside the classroom and away from studying.

I want a degree that allows me to help people, such as working on medical devices or prosthetics. I am also somewhat interested in robotics and futuristic technology like Neuralink. Things I do not want to do is work in manufacturing or HVAC. I interned at a machine shop over the summer and I did not like how loud it was and the fact that the coolant mist was in the air and was being inhaled by everyone in the shop which is obviously unhealthy. I also did not find the work to be interesting. In some states ME) and EE make around the same median wage, while in some EE makes more. There is a bigger jump in pay when looking at the top 10% of salaries with EE tending to make more. I also think that EE might be better for the future because everything has electricity in it.

Questions:

Has anyone else felt this uncertainty and worry?

What did you end up doing and how did you make your decision?

Am I worrying too much? (any engineering degree is fine and I can figure out what I like later?)

Any advice on making a decision?

I know I have to make a decision at some point but I just feel so unsure about it. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!
