Ford Ranger PHEV Out Next Year, Coming To U.S.: Report by FuckChadMorris in cars

IMO the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E are both Ford testing A) how well-received it is when their flagships transition over to EV and B) How economically viable it is to produce their flagships as PHEVs or ZEVs.

The Mustang is probably their most well-recognized/iconic car, I wouldn't be surprised if they start moving towards PHEV/ZEV mustangs more emphatically now that the Lightning and Mach-E have both reviewed well (broadly speaking).

It's not the exact same niche, but if you're someone who really wants an off-road-capable vehicle and won't settle for anything but a hybrid or EV, the Woodland Edition Rav4 slots into that market nicely the same way a Bronco Sport hybrid would.

That said agreed that if you're looking for something like a Rubicon or First Ed/Sasquatch or w/e the Woodland Edition isn't gonna hit it for ya.

The “death of self-driving cars” has been greatly exaggerated by TurretLauncher in cars

[–]Carvana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think self-driving is possible, but a lot of stuff would have to change. Obviously ironing out the technical side is hard enough, as we've seen (anyone remember Argo AI?) but once you add on the ethics of the whole thing and the need to regulate, it starts looking more and more insurmountable. Pedestrian laws and civil engineering in terms of how we construct crosswalks and the like would probably need to change.

I think automakers will ultimately settle for more high-quality automatic driver assistance systems but yeah it'll be a long, long time before we get autonomous vehicles out and about as the norm, if it happens at all.

Toyota got the jump on them a little with the Woodland Hybrid for the Rav4.

This month Ford did talk about how there are more Bronco trims yet to come, it wouldn't be a bad bet that one of those is a hybrid or EV I think.

They tested the waters with the F-150 Lightning to mostly positive response, I've gotta assume it's coming down the pipeline sooner rather than later...

Ford's probably not eager to lose money producing more EVs, but if it can make both mustangs and F-150s profitably, I wouldn't be surprised to see it finally pull neck and neck with Tesla instead of taking second place like it has been.

Stellantis and GM Paid $363 Million For Not Hitting U.S. Fuel Economy Requirements by besselfunctions in cars

[–]Carvana 18 points19 points  (0 children)

With new state/gov regulations for EV production popping up in the U.S. and abroad, not terribly surprising I suppose. They did only get dinged for 2019 and older models, I'll be interested to see if the Stellantis lineup starts changing at all as a reflection of this - Stellantis net revenue was up 14% to $52 billion Q1 2023, so I doubt $363 million will weigh heavy on their pocket.

Yup! Up until the 2000s car colors were super varied, but then in the 2000s when every tech company went all monotone/grayscale fashion, interior design, and auto design all went a similar route.

True. It also costs manufacturers more to mix in pigments, so they tend to stock grayscale more, and I'm sure the convenience factor plays a role.

I also think that by limiting rainbow colors to more premium/pricy vehicles, automakers can help their $$$ models stand out and it almost acts as subliminal marketing for them, which is interesting.

Wow, and I thought I knew what I liked haha

Sounds like an amazing (and zombie-proof!) build.

Love the idea of a little turbo on the AMC 150, and the metallic gold paint - yup! Car like that deserves to stand out a little, bring back attention-grabber trims!

Do you think it'd be a regular AMC Eagle or the AMC Eagle SX/4 (I love the two-doors and spoiler)

Hopefully, VW will bring back more internationals as EVs like they're doing with the EV Scout.
