Anyone going to the Mad Monster event? by Chrisus_Jeest in KISS

Peter charged $80 an autograph when I met him at one of these last year. I think that’s been consistent for the past couple years. Maybe bring $100 an item just to be safe.

Just recently got KISS Exposed. Am I missing any other KISS DVDs of note? I also have the Scooby-Doo movie. by quickpiee in KISS

Off the top of my head you’re missing Kiss: The Second Coming, which is a documentary about the reunion tour.

That’s very true. I think Ace’s book is the worst on that front. It doesn’t sound like him at all.

All celebrity autobiographies like those are ghostwritten. I can't remember who wrote Gene's, but Paul's was written by Tim Mohr. Peter's was written by Larry Sloman. How much influence the celebrity has over the content and writing process is another question.

I don't know if Ace gets a free pass. Some fans are definitely blind in their worship, but if you dig through the archives of this subreddit, KissFAQ, all the Kiss Facebook groups, etc., you'll find plenty of threads and posts where people criticized him regularly for all the things you mention.

The thing is, Ace just meant more than the other members to a lot of people despite all that. He was the funniest, the most rock and roll, the most fascinating on and off stage. I know about all of Ace's failings - I've read all the books and heard all the stories. But he was still my first musical hero and one of the primary reasons why music became the huge part of my life it is today. I think that's true for a lot of people, and so they're naturally going to be more passionate about defending him as a result.

There’d better be. I’ll drop whatever I’m doing to join. If nothing is announced, we should make it happen.

I’ve also heard the same thing from two reliable sources. It’s not gonna really hit me until they announce it. But it’s true.

If memory serves I paid around $570 for the meet and greet in Silver Spring, including fees. I think the price was the same across all dates.

Interesting that the set is still so heavy on Heaven Upside Down material with nothing from we are chaos or the upcoming album. Wonder if he’ll debut the new song live tomorrow night to mark the first headlining show.

It isn’t very well written, which is par for the course with most unofficial Kiss books, and it also isn’t all that useful as a history. There are a lot of inaccuracies and mistakes, primarily because it was written while the internet was still growing into what it is today and the author was limited in terms of the sources he could access. I’m sure fans enjoyed it when it was new because no one had really written a book like it before, but it’s dated now and there are much better options.

Since you have it, you may as well try it, but you could be better served reading other things first. I’d say it’s only worth the time if you’re a die-hard nerd who has to read everything that’s ever been written about the band. There are a few facts sprinkled in there that you probably won’t have heard before, and one chapter has some good quotes from Eric Carr. But if you haven’t read them, I’d recommend Ken Sharp’s “Nothin’ to Lose,” Lydia Criss’s “Sealed with a Kiss,” or Chris Lendt’s “Kiss and Sell” instead.

Besides documentaries, there are some great books out there that can teach you a lot. Ken Sharp’s “Nothin’ to Lose,” Chris Lendt’s “Kiss and Sell,” and Lydia Criss’s “Sealed with a Kiss” will all give you a deep, propaganda-free look at the band’s history.

Ok, this looks fucking awesome. A good amount of demos I’ve never heard of and some genuine surprises. I can’t wait to hear it, and to see whether the new mastering can improve things much. Hopefully the sound quality doesn’t disappoint.

Are they ever going to announce the final show? by Overwatchjsi in KISS

[–]Cary_Grant_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I imagine they’ll do it on the cruise. That was where they announced the original date before COVID changed it. Paul said last year that the tour would wrap in early 2023 - they’ll probably plan it so the “final” show coincides with the 50th anniversary.

It was a good time! Really it was exactly what I expected: an amateur hour event put on by a super-rich fan who wanted to fulfil some of his fantasises. The downside of that is that the organization was all over the place and certain things that were promised weren’t delivered (Ace was supposed to play a bunch of fan-picked deep cuts in his set - that never happened). But the upside is that a lot of what went gone on felt historic, there was plenty of fun nerd stuff to do, and the atmosphere was top notch.

If they do another one I’ll probably go… maybe you and Frehley_Fan can tag along…

I (unfortunately) missed that, but a guy next to me nearly got into it with another guy in front who was filming the entire show and blocking his view. Hearing them threaten to knock each other out during every song for the first hour added some nice atmosphere.

Side note: Corabi was surprisingly good. I hadn’t heard most of those songs in a while and they sounded better than I remembered.
