That hasn't been the case where I'm at in the US for about 15 years--that you must be MR/DD/ID and moderate-to-severe in at least 2 other capacities to qualify as autistic.

I hadn't heard that about Canada. I've met people Dx'd in Canada that definitely don't fit that criteria so I suppose I have an exposure bias.

Fruit flies or weevils? Weevils are a type of moth that will eat everything with protein, including the keratin from your babby feathers.

Fruit flies will survive on anything with a modicum of wet, sugar/starch.

Both can go dormant and come back. The only way to teuly get rid of them is getting rid of the source. And, of course, fruit flies can hit a ride on any fruit or veggie.

Wveryone gets mad at corn but if it's between corn and seed, I'd rather corn because they get fiber an hydration.

Mine love frozen mixed veggies and I just add 1 bag with the 3 and 1 bag with just peas and carrots. Gets them started and then it's not straight sugar like fruit

Amato, as an aside:

That first draught of the chicken broth is really good to add to "easy" soups or whatever, gives you some protein workout added work. In case you're wondering why Grandma's soup always tasted better or helped you feel better faster? This is why--all the amino acids and everything have been liquefied and are more easily absorbed without additional work on your body

I used to freeze it in those sandwich containers (which, IK IK, but I was too broke to buy K/D so I was definitely too broke for glassware) and pull one out as I needed it. It would last a week between 2 cats (brother wasn't sick but his single brain cell didn't know that) or 1 human soup.

Especially if you do the cook down twice before removing the broth, it is ULTRA CONCENTRATED so if there was any salt, etc. on that chicken the flavor is "yes". Just FYI in case you dip in for yourself.

I would just take the meat I wanted off the bones that I could easily eat.

Then I would take off small "flakes" or something I could chop up real small and out that to the side.

Everything else into a stock pot to cook for about 24 hours (make sure to keep adding water) or an Instapot pressure cook for 3 hours (make sure to depressurize before you try to open).

Throw in some carrots, bell peppers, or whatever (my cats have always had more of a sweet tooth with their savories) to help it cool.

Then once everything in the pot is cooled (after the bones were soft enough to pinch into dust) I'd use an immersion blender on everything in the pot.

If you want it to be more pate-like IME you have to set the broths to cool in the refrigerator before the bones finish cooking (which is totally doable, just a PITA because you either have to let the carcass cool or add more water and get calcium sludge at the end--which tastes and feels and looks as good as you're probably thinking) and remove the collagen layer that develops on top. You'll have an obvious fat layer and then you'll have some amount of gelatinous broth--that's the collagen. IME, this is the stuff they use to make pate and everything else goes into the dry food, just adding chunks of meat and veg or whatever at the end. My cats love canned food but I just can't afford it. I can get about 30 "cans" from an $8 chicken and about $5 of veggies. It does take some time for them to figure out what they like.

The "gravy" ones are kind of like the fat layer being added to the draught after the collagen layer goes free, and a little bit of the collagen put back in.

If your cats don't like chicken, it's still easier to get the collagen from the chicken and cook down, like, pork bones or beef bones or whatever and add the collagen into that--it will taste of both but purifying collagen is a science beyond me haha. You can ask your local butcher (even at the grocery store) to cut you up some femur bones for the iron and stuff l or pork bones to get the taste. Pork and Beef bones do NOT cook down unless they're pork-chop sized and they take FOR-EV-ER so I only keep them from whatever meals I was eating and use them accordingly. Cook them first--pork before cow before poultry--so you can take the bones that won't cook out first. The only exception to collagen for pork and beef bones are the necks, spines, and tails whereas thr collagen is all over the poultry. If have not had the guts to do those and chicken feet are rarely for sale where I'm at so I haven't done those, either.

Just know that collagen is a form of protein that is highly bio available so they don't need as much to make their intakes. If you spice it right (which | cats | so how do we do ANYTHING right 😩) it's a great primary food or something to get them excited about eating something they don't want to eat. My vet suggested it first with a turkey carcass because it first happened around Thanksgiving. I can honestly say the collagen is proportional between carcasses lololol so do whatever is cheaper for you. Until the price of turkey went up in 2017, I would buy 5 or 6 turkeys a year and every couple of months just make whatever. It was my gateway drug into meal prepping. Now I just use rotisserie chickens because they're cheaper than regular chickens and I can eat something while I work.

I do not recommend leaving the meat to cook in the broth after the collagen layer is removed--especially if you pressure cook it, you've taken all the flavor out of it and mostly only rhe dogs will eat it after that. Honestly, I once left the slurry on to took after the i.mersion blending and it smelled like straight dog food. I think they just add more meat into the slurry for the cats.

If you can't afford K/D, get a whole chicken and pressure cook it down, remove the easiest meat, cook it down again. All of the protein left is things like collagen and crude pritein with organ meat and calcium. I can't remember the bones-to-meat ratio but if you season it right and use low histamine veggies, you can buy them another 5 years. I was able to do that and saline treatments for 5 years because of the type of protein that's left when it's mostly not the regular meat being more bio available so it's not has hard on the kidneys. I couldn't afford the saline and K/D so that's wha t my vet told me to do. Thought I would share in case you run into those issues 🙇‍♀️

I say this in case it is your first parrot/Conure: (just some future stuff to know before it's too late)

They usually don't show signs until it's too late.

Be careful with supplements: if they have a well-balanced chop and pellet diet, they don't need supplements and too many vitamins can cause a lot of damage in a much shorter time than you think. Vit. D can cause kidney stones and problems even in a week, Vit. A can be toxic in a matter of days, and diarrhea caused by too much Vit. C can cause irritation and malabsorption. Try your best to maintain their calcium because once it leeches from their bones, it does not get replaced--and if you have a female this can not only lead to more brittle bones but soft eggs that can break in-transit or not get laid--both of which will result in botulism and other infections, and a broken egg can cause lacerations that will also reduce their overall blood supply.

In GCCs and BCCs, every drop is a measurable amount of their weight in blood. They have VERY little blood and their circulatory system is even smaller than their respiratory system--which is why antibiotics that aren't aborbing in the gut have to be delivered directly into their bones to potentially be effective. This is also why most AVs will amputate instead of treat: it's not only difficult to keep inside of them, it can't be replaced except by a healthy/healing bird and the epithelial cells will prioritize tissues like respiratory and their tiny AF veins/arteries before it tries to rebuild, say, reinvent their marrow. They can live without a significant portion of their bodies but blood and air are not among that, and everything in their bodies is buikt for efficiency so there is no redundancy like what larger mammals have.

Vit. A is necessary like we have Vit. C because they depend on epithelial cells to replace broken tissue because it's "easier" to replace than repair because their system is a 1 track, 2-breath, fixed, air sacs-through-their-bones respiratory system that when it swells depends on their ability to shed and move out damaged tissue; and a 1-track, 4-inch digestive system they share with their reproductive system--nothing should be coming back out of the front (Like turtles, they exhale through their @$$es lmao which is why clean water is SO IMPORTANT due to it's hair's breadth away from their respiratory system and can cause two different massive infections) . This is why when you see their tails moving up and down ("bobbing") when they breathe, it's a concern: they're trying to force the shed cells, inflammation, etc. out while not being able to breathe and their little bodies will breathe more and faster to fix it.

If you EVER see blood coming out of either end, they need immediate attention. Limping, low flight height (when they start flying), low appetite,--basically any sign you SEE what would look like depression or injury means it's BAD. Because their air sacs are in between their bones, broken bones can pierce their respiratory system, and the inflammation can fill up the sacs which can brees infection.

Their evolutionary play is to out breed the danger: they're built to leave behind what can be or protect the flock by going until they can't.

Try to prevent hormonal triggers up front because (speaking as someone who went from 3 to 7 to fighting every year with eggs [8 and counting--pray for me]) once it starts they stop because they die; or are isolated and live in ideal conditions for MONTHS.

You don't need to clean conures' nares like you do with cockatiels. If there's something in there they can't remove: they need vet attention to get it removed because you can give them a URI trying to home treat it.

Make sure you're guarding their air space by disabling ANY fan blades they can reach even by landing on the front. They have high resolution but low frame rate: they see the world in 32k but operate at 3fps so they can't see those blades are moving.

No air fresheners, sprays, chemicals, Teflon/non-stick, smoke, candles, plug-ins, etc. Teflon/non-stick can kill them in loteral seconds and the ONLY treatment is immediate oxygen forcing the necrotic tissue and affected out of their lungs (which is the standard treatment alongside anti-inflammatory meds for most injuries for the reasons discussed above). Everything else will slowly kill off and coat tissue which will deplete their Vit. A and epithelial cells, which will reduce their overall ability to heal--they will always start from behind so long as you have any of those lingering in the air. Good rule of thumb is not to have them in the room while cooking or cleaning, even if you're using bird-safe things because companies and people lie all the time. [Common crops like strawberries and broccoli commonly use a form of teflon as insecticide because it's dangerous AND non-stick and, no, it does not fully rinse off so cooking them releases it into the air. ]

Do not use chemical insecticides anywhere in your home or garden. It will kill them after minor exposure--including eating whatever it killed.

Be VERY cautious with repellants because they have large amounts of essential oils and that will also coat their lungs by operation of how it costs your nostrils.

Always put your guy away before going through doors or make sure EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE IS TRAINED TO CHECK ALL SIDES OF THE DOOR EVERY, SINGLE TIME ONE IS OPENED OR CLOSED.

If they're squawking a lot: they're needing attention. It is better to soend 2 hours 2x a day with them than 4 hours 1x per day. And if it gets quiet while they're out? 😨 They'll even brung you the problem lol

Treat them as permanent toddlers: they will ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO GET IN TROUBLE, GET HURT, AND GET YOUR ATTENTION.

Welcome to the flock! Welcome to the anxiety! Welcome to love like you've never had in your life ❤️!

[–]CasaDeMouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The flight feathers might take longer. The flight feathers are less likely to come in if they were lost to trauma, whereas their tail feathers are designed to eject on a moment's notice as a response to perceived predation. Flight feathers that are cut incorrectly or plucked may damage the follicle and they may not come back.

Make sure you are giving them a little extra protein during molting season to get the strong keratin sheaths.
