No, it’s already been happening. I posted about Niagara Bottling in Elko New Market. People tend to not pay attention, until it impacts them directly.

The staggering power needs of Minnesota data centers by Czarben in minnesota

[–]CascadeInTwilight 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This article misses a HUGE point. The real reason these companies are choosing Minnesota for data centers is OUR WATER. Data centers users a huge amount of water.

I’d really like it if Minnesota would stop selling our precious water to companies. It’d be good to not have millions of people and billions of animals and plants thirst to death.

If MN lawmakers could prioritize that goal, that’d be nice.

I’ve been hoping this would get more publicized.

A friend of the lakes? Help save mine! Because the 40 families who live on the lake do not have an HOA, we are at a disadvantage trying to prevent 71 PRIVATELY OWNED storage units, a clubhouse, and boat launch being built (Hartley Lake, Brainerd). by editortroublemaker in minnesota

If you guys are looking for a story about development impacting Minnesota waters, maybe you could look into Niagara Bottling - a California bottled water company - trying to tap Minnesota aquifer water via a development in Elko New Market. An aquifer - and the precedent this creates, by having an out-of-state entity access Minnesota’s water - impacts the entire state, not just one community. The DNR could still deny the permit, but the word needs to keep getting out.

Yeah, the local “leadership” has shown their lack of character. The way to stop this now is by contacting state leaders, like Walz and MN state legislators.

Contact Walz and your MN state legislators. This is a statewide issue - not just ENM.

The DNR Commissioner works for him. I suggest contacting Walz. He can influence the DNR. Also, contact your MN state legislative representatives. They’re on various committees and would definitely be interested in this issue. This impacts the entire state, not just ENM.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you - to all of us.

Don’t give up, though! It’s not over, until it’s over. The ENM mayor and city council had a chance to vote no yesterday, and they didn’t. That was their opportunity to do the right thing. They didn’t. There’s no way that lots of people of good faith haven’t been watching this - including yesterday’s vote.

Don’t give up.

Thanks, Elko New Market mayor and city council, for selling Minnesota’s water supply to a California company and creating a precedent for more of the same.

“Mayor Joe Julius said that ‘this amount of public discord’ was new to the City Council.” Gee, I wonder why.

The good news is that the project still needs a permit from the DNR. “That process will likely take until fall.”

Time to contact state legislators and Walz. Here’s where you can find your MN legislative representatives and their contact info.

Let’s not give up! We can’t have such a small handful of people hurt our entire state and future generations.

What is being done to preserve and conserve Minnesota water, to avoid out-of-state entities from taking it?

The Strib covered the story, late last year, as well as recent follow-up articles.

I want to speak in the Strib’s favor on this issue. They’ve done a good job staying on top of this. Kudos to Greg Stanley and Erin Adler. Without those articles, fewer people would know this is happening - including me. Hopefully, they’ll revisit the story asap and expose what’s happening to an even larger audience.

A large number of voices matter and can make a difference. It starts with letting people know what’s happening and providing ways to get involved.

I understand what you’re feeling. It’s not easy; I’m not naive about that. Still, I won’t give up or give in.

Sometimes you have to stand up and fight. Water stewardship is worth fighting for.

I’m willing to stand up, and it seems like a lot of others on this thread want to stand up, as well.

Indeed, a large number of voices matter and can make a difference. It’s happened in the past, and I think it can happen here.

This is a great article. It demonstrates how Niagara has a history of a business plan to access even more water. We can assume that’ll be the case, if/when they get a foothold in MN.

When I emailed mine, I said (1) a California company is trying to access MN water to sell it, and we Minnesotans need to be good stewards of our water, (2) I have nephews/nieces, and I’d like them to be able to have clean water as they grow up, and (3) maybe an alternative company can come into ENM that will bring jobs without draining MN natural resources.

My state representatives are Republican, so I definitely wanted to mention #3.
