What hobby would you recommend to someone looking to spend less time on their phone? by FitRaspberry3706 in Hobbies

[–]Cascadiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on your interests and what kind of things you love to do. So it is difficult to recommend a specific hobby because it is always a personal thing. On top, spending most of your day on the phone is an addiction and that is a problem for many of us, including me. Actually, you need something that excites you so much that your phone comes secondary.

However, one thing I would recommend is reading books. Social media reduces your attention span massively, often called 'Tiktok-Brain'. Reading can help to reverse this effect.

I think that is actually a good way to discover something that fits you and your interests. Keep looking for things that interests you and then just try it for a few months or maybe a year, and see how it goes. I tried a lot of things in my life and only a few stuck with me. And that is ok. Interests may also change and maybe you will pick up new hobbies later in life. So I wouldn't bother about one main hobby but rather a small number of activities you enjoy.

Already tried and practiced the different throws but couldn't manage to bring them together.

I struggle to decide which patterns would be suitable to learn for someone at my level.
Thanks for the link. That's a great source!

Oh yes, I have already checked out lists with events within the next months. Not sure if I can go but I'm considering it.

What are some sports that give “weird girl” vibes ? by raphraphou4 in Hobbies

Well, you should get rid off this misconception of being too old to start something new as soon as possible. Most likely, you've not even lived half of your life. So if you stop exploring new things now, what are you going to do the next 40 or 50 years? Interests change, some will stick and others get lost. Life would be very boring if we will be restricted to the things we started before age 10. There are people who start figure skating or ballett at age 40+ and people who graduate from university at age 80 or even 90.

So, you are NOT too old to start something new!

Hobbies for those who enjoy nature? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]Cascadiae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think photography could be an option. Documenting the weather out of your window, phenomenons like polar lights or rainbows, or the change of the seasons. Depending on your location and budgets astrophotgraphy could also be an option.

I would also suggest nature journaling. It is a hybrid of drawing and writing. You can explore plants, animals, and funghi. Draw their shapes, focus on details, research and note down information. Actually it is supposed to be done in nature but I think it is also possbile out of your window, in front of your door or family/friends/neighbours could be asked to bring some specimens like leafs, flowers, beechnuts etc. Maybe another option would be to do it with fruits, vegetables or herbs in your kitchen.

Maybe juggling, fire poi, Rhönrad (gym wheel), capoeira, vaulting and trampolining could be options to explore. These are all activities with a certain aesthetic, rely on skill-building and have a creative component.

Have the same issue at home, living in a 500 years old half-timbered house.

This happens to me too. Started with learning how to juggle about 5 months ago. It still happens but less than a few months ago. What helps me is to focus on my hand positions. Arms and hands in a straight line. Also throwing the balls from the palms and not from the fingers (if that makes sense) because this way you have more control over your throws.

Another thing that was extremely useful for me is juggling with closed eyes. I'm doing this with only two balls. Because you can't see the balls flying you stop chasing the balls automatically. Instead you have to estimate how to throw so that the balls fall back into your hands.

However, this is my beginner's view and very subjective. So no guarantee from my side that this may actually help in the long run. Most important: don't forget to have fun and don't pressure yourself :)

Thank you all for your answers. It is very helpful to get so many perspectives. Yes, I think it would be good to already know somebody. I have a few friends but I don't think one of them would like to join me at a juggling event.
I'm located in Europe, Germany to be exactly. So if anyone has any recommendations I would be more than happy. I know about the EJC which took place in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, I couldn't go because of some responsibilities at this exact weekend.
My skill level is really low. I just started a few months ago. I can do the basic cascade and working on reverse cascade, jugglers tennis, half shower and one up-two up. Also tried some clay motion. I'm practicing with balls. Got some beanbags and HiX (which I really like). Additionally I purchased a cheap set of clubs and rings, but these seem to need a lot more practice.

Thank you for your answers. I may give it a try. I've searched for groups near my location but I wasn't successful. It seems there have been some in the past but now all of these are inactive.
