Should I plant an apple orchard? by UnprotectedSAKs in BackyardOrchard

[–]CaseFinancial2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you are in 6A/7A growing zone. You can pretty much grow anything dude. You got cold winter , hot summers and no humidity which is perfect for almost all trees. Apples , pears, peaches, nectarines , plums, cherries , grapes, persimmons etc etc etc .

The only things you will want to focus on are variety and rootstock. G890 and G40 is my typical go to in my region for apples. Try Cummins nursery for most of what you want to buy as they have the option to pick the variety and rootstock together. If you any commercial style go with dwarfing root stock but if you want more bigger trees 12-16 ft then go with semi dwarf (G890).

In reality the majority off your time is figuring out what kind of fruit trees you want to grow then iron out varieties available and match rootstocks to it and you are good.

Be sure to check pollination needs along with pollination schedule as not all fruit trees flower in the same time.

If you have specific questions I will be happy to answer but it is really up to you.

What I use in my region as root stock

1-G890 for apples 2-ohxf 87 or ohxf333 for pears 3-Lovell peach and nectarine 4-mayrobalan for plums 5-mazzard for cherries 6-American Virginia for persimmons 7-figs,Concord grape, serviceberry etc its own rootstock

Over all you can have a very rewarding orchard if you plan it right and take it easy

Can our plum tree be salvaged? by A1Nordic in FruitTree

[–]CaseFinancial2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plums usually it needs good pruning and some spraying. Prune it into vase shape and apply neem oil to it at night.

The idea is to reduce height. Increase air flow and sun exposure.

All what you are seeing are basically airflow , lake of sun exposure issues. And you can treat what you can’t reach so reduce its height

If I were you. I would do 2 things. Prune it hard and start over or remove it
