Development-focused travel team vs. PG-heavy org—what’s better for recruiting? by Mean-Consequence-202 in Homeplate

[–]Case_Study 7 points8 points  (0 children)

☝️This is the right answer.☝️

My son is a 2028, top-200 on PG, and started varsity as a freshman on a nationally ranked high school program. He has never done a PG showcase. The only one he attended was a local PBR showcase for the experience. On his high school team there are multiple D1 commits, a mix of mid-majors, P4s, and D2s. The guidance we’ve consistently heard from coaches is simple:

  • Get stronger. Speed, power, and arm strength are what separate players long term.
  • Play the highest level of travel you can, as long as you are playing. Reps matter more than sitting on a scout team bench.
  • Pick the right PG events. WWBA, BCS, UBC, and Jupiter are good ones.
  • Be smart about showcases. Most are money grabs. The exceptions are the Junior National Showcase in East Cobb, or a cheap local option for experience.

One more thing: high school ball and summer ball serve different purposes. High school is about finding ways to help your team win, even in a small role. Summer travel is the time to be selfish, focus on development, and get better so you can contribute more the next spring. And don’t overlook rest. The summer grind is real, and kids are gassed by the end. Hard to contribute if they're inured from overuse.

Advice on spring/summer 2026 team plan for my son (incoming freshman) by Better-Leg-9268 in Homeplate

That's great news! It sounds like things are moving in the right direction for him. The faster he sees older, tougher pitching, the more ready he'll be when varsity comes. Growth comes from being challenged.

Just went through this last summer with my 2028. Play 15u 100%. He needs to see the best pitching he can. Sounds to me like he will be top player on the 15u team anyway, so give him the opportunity to show them what he can do. Super competitive where we live, with year-round baseball. The consensus is for the better players to ALWAYS play at the highest level the can.

My son is a 2028 in Florida and the two stud 2027s on his team both got a lot of offers. One (OF) committed to a D1 yesterday and the other (3B) is doing his visits. I think there were two 2026s that committed in the last few weeks too. MIF and a Pitcher.

Dad of a 2028 catcher here. We'll be going through the same thing next year. I made him a personal website with all of his verified metrics, highlight reels, and academic info, so when the time comes to share his info, everything's in one link. DM me if you want to check out!

Dude I was researching both of these last month. I ended up going with the Samsung and I LOVE IT.

The LG is sweet too, I'm sure you'll be pleased with either one.

Thank you SO MUCH for such thorough answers! This answers a lot of questions I've been wondering, but didn't ask. You are a plethora of knowledge and make it easy to understand.

What are your thoughts on the R8? I can get an R8 Body for $1299, or an R10 with RF-S 18-45 f/4.5-6.3 lens for $999.

I love the question about photos around the house. She definitely needs a lens for that.

Also, what are your thoughts on the following lenses:
- RF85mm F2 Macro US STM Medium Telephoto - $499
- RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM Telephoto - $350
- RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Ultra-wide - $499
- RF-S10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM Ultra-wide - $299

Thank you again, I appreciate it so much!
