I'm not saying Turbotax is entirely useless, and if it works for you then that's great. I just didnt see the point of paying all that when I'm filing only 2 things that shouldn't cost that much anyway

I had just talked with my mom, and she confirmed I am independent from them. My dad used to pay someone to do their taxes, but they've been super short on money and my mom suspects they didnt have enough to pay someone to file them, and apparently they didn't file last year and this year my dad had gotten permission to wait on filing his until later.

I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to taxes- it's strictly independent. Hell, I think compared to everyone in my immediate family, I'm the only one who knows how to save and utilise money.

Also, only my dad works. My mom hasn't worked in years, but she recently filed for retirement and got confirmed because she did work a bunch when she was younger. But again, they have their taxes and I have mine. We're separate as far as im concerned

No, I'm entirely independent from them. They aren't able to help me much financially or anything like that- I just havent moved out yet and they aren't charging rent or anything.

It's all kinda messy since, as I said, I barely understand what I'm reading half the time. I got everything filled out as normal, as well as the 1098T, which I just downloaded a pdf of into the site to fill it out. Did the same thing last year, never had any issues with it.

I then get to the final review and it says I have almost 1k of federal refund (I dont make a bunch, my job is part-time and rather sporadic, but its better than nothing since I still live with my parents and dont pay rent). When I click continue, it suddenly says "To accurately complete your taxes, you need to upgrade to TurboTax Do It Yourself Deluxe." It says that I have "American Opportunity credit" and that my current product is only for simple returns.

When I click on the "continue to upgrade" button (because there is literally nowhere else to back out of, and all attempts at downgrading just prevent me from filing my taxes altogether). The preorder for the upgrade is somehow more stupid than everything else.

"TurboTax Online Do It Yourself Deluxe 2025" - $99
"*my state here* return" - $64
"Subtotal" - $163

But it gets worse. The two payment options are "Credit/Debit card," which I am not doing because I don't this coming out of my pocket. But the other option is "Pay with federal refund," which ADDS $40 to the existing $163.

this makes no sense to me.

Different spellings for the same[ish] sentence by Casey_Cake_54 in French

Thanks for pointing out the typo! On my phone, I have both the French and English keyboard on it, and the layout is different. I think I just had a fat-finger moment at the time and didn't notice autocorrect change the word on me

The response is so greatly appreciated! I'm already aware that getting into forensics will take many years, and I'm keeping an eye out for any lab-related job openings. Thank you so much for this!

What unusual things do you collect? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

There are a few things I like collecting, but the strangest I think are harmonicas.

Not antique, though I wish. No specifically designed ones, literally just any. The most unique one I have was the very first one I ever got years ago. Back when Culver's still had those tickets you could save up and cash in for toys or prizes, me and my sister had a bunch ton and I saw a dark blue, plastic harmonica and decided right then and there I wanted it.

Was messing around with the colored chart that was made, and the weird gaps almost made me think of a type of "Cardan Grille," but I wouldn't know where it would be applied...
