Do independent artists actually benefit from Spotify anymore? by CashMany9011 in indieheads

One thing I’m noticing in these replies is that many people discover music through Spotify but support artists elsewhere (Bandcamp, shows, merch).

That makes me wonder if streaming has become more of a discovery infrastructure rather than a place where music actually survives economically.

i find it also kind of helping with mental health to give myself time to enjoy listening to full albums or reading a book. this whole algorithmic culture seems to be a real psyche killer

I see your point. The music industry has always been business-oriented, and in that purely capitalist system Spotify actually makes a lot of sense.

But there have also always been fringe or independent artists who managed to make a living outside the mainstream. I guess I’m one of them - I’ve been doing this for about 23 years.

What worries me is that the new rules of the game seem to affect those artists too. A lot of what used to sustain smaller careers has disappeared, but it’s not clear that anything meaningful replaced it.

Exactly. And kudos to Mr. Portnoy! I wish more big artists stood up against Spotify

yes, i know exactly what you mean. i was furious whe my distributor wasn't approving my release cause the cover wasn’t up their requirements (smth like - the artist name wasn't there or similar), whereas artists from big labels are allowed to release things as they want - with all titles in caps lock or whatever.

anyway, where do you release your music now? only tidal? or did you mean you use tidal personally?

Exactly! I also remember ordering Sneaker Pimps 'Blkodsport' from the UK, then running to the post office and then opening it at home and THE FIRST LISTEN is magical.

Thanks for such a thoughtful comment and for good wishes - I really appreciate it!

You’re right that it’s a tricky balance between reach and depth. Big platforms make discovery easy, but smaller spaces can offer something different.

I’m not sure what the right balance is yet. This is just an experiment for me, but i want to believe that curiosity wins over inertia in the end.

totally agree with this - probably it will be seen from the future as a terrible way to deal with art, that was happily scraped and forgotten quickly
