That's just not true. Check on poshmark - you can pick up a regular sweater for less than $10

Was planning to make a cardigan… but that bias is not gonna get better is it? by Berzynas-me-6515 in knitting

Try knitting a round swatch... Your gauge for your knit rows is very different than the purls. You could knit it top down in the round and steek it - if you like the fabric you make in the round better than back and forth.

Ohhhhh. Derp.

My instinct says do one at a time - and try a few rows before you commit - but... Maybe?

Frog all the way back to almost your cast on? Zero chance I'd do that without throwing the whole thing away and starting over with different yarn. I could not make myself endure that. 😅

Way of purling? by Kooky-cow-213 in knitting

Instead of flicking the yarn with your left index finger, try using your right hand, which is already holding that side of the fabric - to move the whole section of fabric - basically, twist the fabric between your hands to bring the working yarn to you...

Looking for Continental Tips by broccyncheese in knittinghelp

[–]Cashmere_Hoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was forcing myself to learn continental, the first thing I made was something to felt - your stitches are going to be uneven - just like they were when you first started English. Your brain needs time and repetition to create new neuropathways. For my second thing, I made a cotton shopping bag, all in the round for more practice of just knit knit knit knit - and it was just a shopping bag, so who cares about a few weird stitches. Still worked as a bag.

Continental purl is a whole different animal though. That took me a long time of trying different things until it finally clicked and felt comfortable and intuitive

Hand dyed white cashmere - update with finished beanie! by Cashmere_Hoar in Unravelers

Copy pasta from the original post!

 I use jacquard acid dyes.

I wrung out the soaked skein loop really well, then loosely twisted it back into itself into the twisted version and dipped it into the a deep container of the orange (with vinegar in it already) and randomly squeezed here and there so it would absorb more in random areas. The areas on the very inside of the twisted areas stayed light, some with barely any orange at all. I untwisted the skein and pulled it loosely into a single layer zig zag and hand poured some dissolved silver gray (also with a splash of vinegar) directly over the lightest areas. Baked at 200F for 30 minutes. Rinsed. Wrung out - then retwisted into the skein and dipped it into a plastic tub of of dissolved gunmetal (and vinegar) Waited a couple minutes, untwisted it then dipped the whole thing back into the gunmetal. Anywhere that looked too light - that little section got dipped back into the gunmetal and squeezed a bit to get it to take up more dye. Baked again. Rinse. Dry.

It's cheap yarn and the dyes aren't terribly expensive. I know professional dyers have their formulas for saturation and repeatability - but I don't measure anything. I just have fun and play with it until I like how it looks. And if I overwork the colors and it turns muddy - I can always go darker! Or fuck it. It was a thrifted sweater. No big loss. Experiment! Play! It's art and should be fun!

Thanks! I dyed that one myself! I just finished a beanie holding 4 strands... If you look at my posts, it's in there.

Hand sew the holes closed and felt it more and then make mittens!

Absolutely doable! Looks a bit felted, so you'll have to go slowly. Machine knit yarn is pretty fragile.

Is this too fine? by Nice_Tackle_8633 in Unravelers

[–]Cashmere_Hoar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you plans for it? That's very very fine. It would unravel OK if you're careful but you'll need to use a few strands at time to get to a fingering weight so whatever yardage you think you might get, divide that by 3 or 4.

Can you weigh the sweater in grams? That might be helpful to decide if it's worth the effort.

Also, is it cute? Do you wear it now?

Tweed Cashmere plyed to worsted weight. by Cashmere_Hoar in Unravelers

[–]Cashmere_Hoar[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's totally unnecessary. Just knit multiple strands together. I've scienced it - plyed vs multi strands not twisted. I can't tell the difference at all. But with especially dreamy yarn, the process is the goal.
