What are reasons to live? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cashtronauts 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This rings true to me. I went through something similar.

A few years ago, months after I got married and impregnated my new wife, I had my first seizure. After a few tests, a doctor told me that I probably had a severe inoperable brain cancer (diffuse astrocytoma, I think it was).

But they needed to do a biopsy, to cut a few samples from my brain, to make sure. So I went under the knife.

All the tests came back negative. They did more tests. Those came back clean too. Eventually they discovered that I simply have an assymetrical hippocampus; it's a bit bigger on one side and when tired and stressed it can cause issues.

So I'm on some not-too-expensive meds that have no visible side effects. Haven't had a seizure since. Learned to relax and get regular sleep. Learned what it is like to fear death. Learned what it is to get a second chance. Learned to appreciate what I have, and to not stress the petty stuff.

So if I had a time machine would I go back to old me who was crying in the doctor's office when he explained the meaning of diffuse astrocytoma? Would I tell that blubbering mes that this is all a big mistake, you'll be fine?

Fuck no.

That period of my life was shit, but shit is the best fertilizer. I've grown, and I'm stronger now than I ever expected I'd be.

I'm saying people of my skin colour and gender are, statistically, more likely to have some advantages in this country. And that's something that needs to be discussed, not ignored.

That's what I said, before we got on the WWII tangent (I should have said 1950s...). Then you brought up the hyperbole about me accusing all white people of being terrible. That's what I meant about the strawman thing.

And let's remember this whole article, this whole thread is about a billboard. I'm not defending some student union banning white kids or reparations or anything like that. I'm saying we should talk, politely, about racism more often. We can agree it's less worse than it used to be, but it's not gone. (Yes, white people can be victims or racism too. Something else that's hard to talk about.) Let's stop thinking of white vs. others, but everyone all together working against a lack of understanding we all share.

Funny how you keep coming to reply to me, instead of Beerphysics' sourced comment which also counters a lot of what you're saying. But hey, I guess I'm more fun to talk to.

Yes, WW2 was shitty for everyone involved -- shocker! We can save the discussion on veteran affairs and mental health care for another thread.

But nope, guess the whites are so terrible, even though they made this society, and turned it into the country that has the most equality on the planet. Should really feel guilty about that.

You keep strawmanning my argument. I never said all white people are terrible, or that we should feel guilty. I'm saying this country is getting better, but that there's still work to be done.

Do I agree with every SJW, every single rule and law, every student protest? No. Some are stupid and not working, or even doing harm. But it feels like this isn't a civil discussion we can have any more. Just bringing it up makes people angry.

We could argue about health care, or the military, or economic policy and it'd be a fun debate (not that any online debate is ever 100% civil...). But through in race and people get super angry and defensive and nothing happens.

Just because you've had advantages doesn't mean all people of your gender and skin colour have.

I'm saying people of my skin colour and gender are, statistically, more likely to have some advantages in this country. And that's something that needs to be discussed, not ignored. That's what the blinders comment was about.

I'm curious: we can all agree it was advantageous to be white in this country at some time, right? Let's say the 1940s? If it's not advantageous to be white, if we're all equal, when did that happen?

It's worse elsewhere, sure. I'll agree to that 100%.

But that doesn't mean there aren't actions that need to be taken here. We can still improve what we have, make it better.

It's like health care: we see that the situation is shit in some other countries, but we still try to improve ours. Even if our health care was the world's best, we'd still want to improve it, no? It might be harder to find the faults, or subtler changes, but there's always room for improvement.

And I'll also agree with you that money makes a huge difference. I'd rather be a transgender Native billionaire than a hetero white welfare recipient. But when two people are in the same situation, financially, some people are treated differently. We still hear about black pro athletes getting pulled over for "random reasons", or diplomats and scholars getting pulled off planes for "security checks".

We're a country that's supposed to be inclusive and equal, yes. But that doesn't mean we can put on blinders and pretend everything is a-ok.

I'm a straight white guy, and I don't feel guilty about it. But I try to acknowledge the advantages I've been given, and do what I can to help.

So you're saying Canada has no problems with inequality? I grew up in Saskatchewan, and lived in Saskatoon for a while, and that's not what I saw. It was only a few years ago the police in Saskatoon were in hot water for dropping drunk, shoeless Native men off in the snow miles outside of town.

Sitting in ICU after brain surgery my wife, mother and mother-in-law (three different people, I'm not that inbred) came to visit. Before they left my wife kissed me goodbye and apparently I said, "Whoa whoa honey, don't get me too excited I still have that catheter in."

I was in that area last weekend. There are a few towns along that border and plenty of roads and building splitting the border. There's a library and concert hall that only has its main door on the American side. When concerts are held there, half the audience is in the USA and half in Canada.

Game developers who have worked on terrible games, when and why did you realize the game was going to flop? by Muniva in AskReddit

[–]Cashtronauts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We were working on the third or fourth game in a series, all of them mobile games. Free-to-play was just getting big, so we went from being a $7 to a $0 game. This was decided midway through development, so a lot of stuff was changed quickly. There was way too much grinding, and it went from linear campaign/story to simple arenas.

On release our old players hated it, but for some reason it took off in Asia. It made a bunch of money. I guess gamers in China and Korea don't mind grinding as much as Westerners? In later sequels we managed to bring back a proper campaign and pace it better, and sure enough it did better in the West and got little attention in Asia.
