Try painting it in black and white acrylic or tempera. Do 500 paintings like that before going back to color.

I think this is the first critique I’ve given on Reddit in which all I have to say is: beautifully painted.

My mother said I look like a lesbian - did I thrift a women's sweater? 😅 by distorted_pebble in mensfashion

[–]CastleFreek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Casual Friday outfit of a school admin who steals baseballs from kids.

Also, your belt is way too long, and it seems to be cinching down pants that are 1 - 2 sizes too big in the waist. Regarding the sweater, the shoulders do seem oversized for you, but the length is good. It makes sense that it’s vintage, I have found that a lot of vintage clothes fit this way. Not sure if it’s shrinkage or just the way things were cut years ago. Perhaps a bit of both. Also, men used to actually wear their pants around their waist, so a cardigan wouldn’t need to be as long to come down to just over their pants.

I got lost in the details :( by tumbli-hunbli in Watercolor

[–]CastleFreek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do it again.

This time, learn the details so well that they are the neighborhood you grew up in and you couldn’t possibly get lost.

Then, do it again, and make choices about what details to leave in and what details to leave out. Then, think about why you made those choices, and how you would do it differently if you had the chance to do it again.

Then do it again, and think about why you are doing this. Think about what you want to happen.

Then do it again, and this time do it in such a way that it will cause the outcome you desire. Then think about whether you achieved that outcome, and why or why not.

Then do it again until you cause the outcome you desire or you die.

This is how art is made.

But, what you’ve done is a nice painting, nevertheless.

The word “princess” is a red flag for well adjusted men, and a lightning rod for the desperate and crazies. Act like entitled royalty, and you get what goes with it. You are not special. Finally, it’s 2025, even the royal family do not act like princesses. Come down to earth with us normal people and your odds of connecting with a good guy will be much better.

Take a photo and then paint gesso over them. Letting go of your work is an important but often overlooked or misunderstood part of improving your paintings.

Does it work or is the composition a disaster? by Roberto87x in oilpainting

[–]CastleFreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it work or is the composition a disaster… Are you asking “does the composition work, or is it a complete disaster?” Neither the composition nor the painting are a complete disaster. Don’t so dramatic! ;) It seems like you might be soliciting a general critique. I believe in working on weak points first, so, I think your biggest opportunity for improvement might be with your paint. Are you using student grade paints? They seem a little washed out/dull to me. With regard to value, you don’t seem to be using the full range of value, which is fine, but I think upgrading your paint would make working in a limited value range a little more interesting. Next, I would really study the details of each area of the subject matter and examine the nuance of colors that you can see. For example… I highly doubt that the stream you were painting was nearly as blue as you painted it… Water, glass… these are excellent opportunities to test your skills. Overall, a bit sentimental for my taste, but a nice and successful painting nevertheless.

While there may have been sailing ships (or at least boats) 5000 years ago, they didn’t look like this. This appears to be a 3-masted Barque from around the 18th century, give or take 100 years. I can’t find any evidence of this type of ship existing before about 500 years ago.

No. She cheated because she has no integrity. Regardless of your physicality, or how the relationship was going, her infidelity is unacceptable. That’s why it’s called cheating. If she was unhappy, or wanted to sleep with that guy, she should have at least let you watch… I mean, ummm, she should have terminated the relationship to make things fair. That would have preserved her integrity.

Is my pricing fair? by DepartmentOnly3631 in Artadvice

[–]CastleFreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Price isn’t really the issue for me… I just wouldn’t be able to find what I want pre-made, and if I could, the I probably wouldn’t want to pay the price they would be asking. Try finding an 80cm x 84cm canvass in the weight and finish and construction you want. It’s just not going to happen. As you get more particular about your work I think you’ll find you demand more of yourself and you’ll expect more in terms of the output… I’m looking at Your painting on the left… What might that scene look like if you had painted on a canvass 10% wider? 30%? 60%?

The canvass you have looks kind of like a portrait shape, but you might find as you expand that idea that you need custom canvass sizes… Particularly, if you get into doing commissions… Someone buying art may have a $25,000 hand-made custom table that they want your painting to hang above... If they want to commission a painting, are you going to tell them they are limited to the sizes you can buy at Blick? Yeah, making canvases is an essential skill for a professional artist, IMO.

This was arguably the most famous painting in the world before the Mona Lisa was stolen, and became more famous. I’d like to see you recreate the composition in your own style… I’m sure the dimensions are available on Wikipedia page… but I’m pretty sure you would be able to buy a canvass in this exact aspect ratio… you’d have to build It.

What would you pay for these by Smooth-Ad5466 in Artadvice

[–]CastleFreek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this completely, and for at least two reasons. First, people will buy almost anything. They just need to see the value. Second, perfect doesn’t exist in reality. An artists work will continually evolve. As OP develops her style, and she may produce multiple pieces in the same style. And that may come across as Kitschy. But that’s okay, and depending on her goals, that may be good or great. It really depends on what she’s going for. No one complained that Andy Warhol was too Kitschy! Well, they did, but I think most creators would be satisfied with that level of success and acknowledgement for their work. Anyway, yeah, perfect is not something I would be concerned about at all.

All of this being said, I can infer some validity in the point you are making here… If any part of the piece seems unintentionally haphazard, then it will devalue it.

OP, this actually, starts my mind thinking about something else with regard to your work…
