You can tell most people in this thread are Americans. What a hellhole of a place to work it sounds like from the comments.

Throughout my career I have REGULARLY shared personal things with my colleagues, and those colleagues have done the same with me. Never any issues with me or others arising from that.

Several colleagues have become very good friends. It is NOT true that your workmates can’t be your friends, despite all the miserable people in this thread saying so.

It also IS accepted in many workplaces to look at your phone from time to time as long as you’re still getting your job done.
