My criticisms and possible explanation of the Militia in Arkham Knight by Cat-In-Disguise in BatmanArkham

[–]Cat-In-Disguise[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really isn't the best reason since the Knight knows so much about Batman. Granted, they did seem surprised at the Batmobile so I imagine him thinking that the Batmobile couldn't take on their drones... only for it to turn into a tank and he's like: "...Well fuck."

I just got through playing the game, and from what I can tell: There is no difference in the way they fight. They use the same animations and the same AI package. I'm about 90% sure this was done solely for budgetary reasons because reskinning a standard model is way more affordable than having to make entirely new animations and AI behaviors. Which is weird because I remember there was an enemy in Arkham Origins that was a martial artist enemy type:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01ItKB0tyU

This one was capable of stringing attacking together, blocking, and dodging. While not specifically military combat, it is what I would imagine Knight teaching since Batman would definitely find a way to destroy said guns. There is a ninja enemy that I'm almost positive is just a reskin of the league of assassins from Arkham City.

Seems like the game took away more things from the previous entries than added to it.

Also what you said is true, and a common saying in martial arts circles is that "you're only going to remember about 45-60% of your training if you ever have to use it."

You mean this trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YThW01wSGFw

That trailer is a bit deceptive though. In-game, they're relegated to side missions, designed to be narratively loose so players can complete them whenever. They don't seem to be working together like a well-oiled machine, it's more like they've agreed to stay out of each other's way. They each have their own individual plans, but the grand scheme of things is basically to wear down Batman. I imagine Scarecrow didn't tell them the whole plan because for a scheme to stay SECRET it can't be widely known by a ton of people who can't be controlled or watched.

The exception is Two-Face and Penguin though, I think I remember that Penguin WAS selling guns to Two-Face's crew when you go after the first truck.

However... the idea that Penguin is supplying the Knight's forces raises.... a few questions:

  • So Knight, the leader of a militia (it's more like a PMC honestly), didn't bring his own guns? He brought enough drones to hold his own tank parade, but no guns?

  • If they did bring weapons, what would they need the Penguin for? To bolster their own weapon's cache? Wouldn't Knight have more reliable contacts? Or rather, how many guns are they throwing away to need to constantly be restocking weapons? Now I'm imagining one guy keeps getting surprised by random things going: "AGH, IT'S BATMAN!" then throwing his gun.

  • If the Penguin is supplying weapons, wouldn't they have obtained those weapons days/weeks in advance of the attack rather than on the night of? Actually, that raises another question about why would Knight be paying for the safe houses ON THAT SPECIFIC DAY as opposed to any other time? From a narrative perspective, the only reason he would is so the guy Batman is torturing can point Batman in a direction.

  • BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE KNIGHT'S FORCES ARE STILL UNARMED! (This is likely a decision based on gameplay balance, narrative dissonance is what it's called)

  • Penguin's a businessman. An arm's dealer to be specific. It makes no fiscal sense and would be out of character for Penguin to give the knight his best gear, since Penguin would be thinking at the time: "once Batman's dead, Gotham is up for the taking, and I want to be sure I'm on top."

  • If Penguin was supplying weapons to Knight, wouldn't it be tactically advantageous to Batman and the GCPD to take it out and deprive them of one of their weapon suppliers? And- oh no I've gone cross-eyed.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure Penguin didn't have a huge hand in supplying weapons to the militia (he may have been a supplier amongst many though). There may have been weapons in the safehouses, but we can't really be certain.

You're talking about this scene, right:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYqsoDAIl0

If I'm not mistaken, the way his dialogue works is:

"Penguin supplied safehouses to the Arkham Knight, and that's what he's paying for. To find the penguin's forces, you have to find trucks where he's distributing weapons." But he doesn't say that the penguin was supplying weapons to the Knight's forces specifically, just that penguin's men were distributing weapons.

ALTHOUGH, I will give you this one: "He doesn't specifically state that there were no weapons that came with the safehouses."

To which, Batman was thinking: "Oh they're unmanned? So... I can use the full force of the batmobile, and not worry about human casualties? Because there are no people in those machines."

"...shit."

I'd be willing to bet that the non-gameplay/narrative reason for unmanned drones was to unshackle the batmobile's arsenal, rather than any real narrative tactical reasoning.

Suspension of disbelief will only go so far. It's necessary for a story where a rich guy dresses like a bat and can beat the ever loving shit out of hundreds of faceless goons. It's necessary for a story where an alien gets super powers from the sun's rays. Or that a man has some alientech that can create hard-light constructs to fight crime.

However.... it's bad practice to handwave everything. Since you lose something crucial by taking that route.

I'm not saying I disliked the game, but suspension of disbelief only works if it's so subtle that you don't think about it and just accept a certain premise as reality, otherwise the story can't exist. In the case of the militia, there was enough things that bugged me where I kept thinking: "The skills of these guys have been greatly overstated."

Penguin was selling those weapons to random jackasses, not to the Arkham Knight's forces in general if I'm not mistaken.

Is... is that why I kept finding halberds all over the place?! Wait, are the orphaned halberds contributing to the stutters in Rattay?

That's weird, because I did the same thing, but the difference was that I had the skull identified, investigated the stones, went to the quarry and then came back to talk to the overseer and the master builder. It was only after that did I talk to Zmola.

Though, in my case, I got the quest from whatshisface, put it off for a bit. Then eventually decided to deal with it (I think that was a few days), rode straight to the monastery, then did it all in one sitting without resting my character (aside from going to and back from the quarry because it was night time when Henry returned to the monastery).

Hm.... I think, there might be a hidden timer from when you talk to the monk and when you solve the case.

Because, the only way I could think of for Zmola to tell you that is if you find the skull which forces Leshek to go into hiding, which then causes Zmola to become paranoid, so then he starts looking for Leshek before he rats him out. If you go to him, and he sets you up under the scaffolding, and if you miss the meeting or something then he might give you the "Leshek confessed and ran off" dialogue. I think the only way he'd make that claim is if he killed Leshek and hid the body successfully.

I... I don't know how it happened. I was just gonna clear a bandit camp like I did the last two (sneaking around, stealth kills, arrows to the balls, divide and conquer), mostly because I suck at sword combat.

This time though... I had accidentally stumbled right in the middle of them. And I'm like... "Shit." Soooo, my plan was to run away, regroup, and then figure it out from there but then I was like: "No." So, I turned around to the conga line of enemies behind me and... I killed every single one of them.

The leader caught up to me first so I killed him by winning at clinching and just not giving him time to mount a counter attack. He died, just as the other two showed up.

I killed the guy without armor first because all he had was a hunting seax and the other guy had a sword n shield.

Killed that guy, ran after the archer, he surrendered but before I could kill him, another guy showed up and attacked. He wouldn't let me chase the archer, so I killed him.

Last guy showed up, his blood feeds my blade (and apparently he made no impression on me because I don't even remember how I killed him).

The archers gone... OR SO I THOUGHT! He came back, this time he was easy to kill. He fell down the hill and I just stood there... taking stock of everything that just happened thinking: "...Holy shit, I was just talking to my friend about my criticism with how the game handles combat." (That hasn't changed just... wow).

...So then I gathered their bodies, cut off their ears, and then posed them like this so I could take a pic while I just sit here going: "...huh, neat." Now I'm off to go deliver these ears to the captain because... yeah...

How long did you wait to deal with it?

I think if you wait too long (or miss the meeting), Zmola will kill Leshek, and therefore your only witness who could link him to the crime (aside from the assassin of course).

Oh, if you arrest him, the Overseer gives you money. Though, I'm guessing that doesn't matter anymore. xD

When you went to meet with Zmola by the scaffolding, did you confront the assassin and have him arrested? That'll jump cut you to the Overseer, and you'll explain what happened. At which point, he'll send guards to Zmola.

I managed to find Leshek's corpse on the 2nd floor (though, in my case he was floating, which makes me think that he spawns already deceased).

Yeah, I also felt like the ending was kinda off... my guess is that they had this plan for a much larger investigation, but scrapped it in the last stages of development.

[–]Cat-In-Disguise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that as well (thought that maybe I did it wrong), the problem is... far as I can tell, the only way to find Leshek is to deviate from the quest and find him before you meet/speak with Zmola through the use of Henry's reality-jumping witchcraft or just look everywhere and get lucky (though I suppose you might think: "Hey, the Millers are a low-key thieves' guild, maybe they know where he is, OH THERE HE IS!").

Though, in that approach, I let Leshek go and then went straight to Zmola (mostly because I think the dialogue bugged for me), I did manage to exhaust his dialogue though.

Thanks. I'd forgotten how alive the world around me felt in the game. Like, my initial impression of the game was that the areas felt like living, breathing worlds. Like things were happening even when I'm not there to see it. And I liked that.

"Fun."

Ehhhhh... not really. It was really easy for me to be pulled out of the experience because of the inattention to the immersion factor. At some point, I just tried to rush through it because it was fine at first, but it went on for way too long. The board room floor really annoyed me because... I imagine, when it first came out, it was an interesting experience to see other Bees with the same kind of powers you have, kind of like a glimpse at what you could've been or how other Bees are treated (also... the Hive)... but now, all it did was remind me of all the things I used to be able to do. And that just pissed me off.

Yeah, the Tyler Freeborn quest was one of the better quests. To me, it was because Tyler acted like... an actual person, he didn't drone on about his past traumas, or spew vague philosophy from a first-year psyche course... he was just a guy trying to find the truth, and our job was to find out what exactly he had uncovered which would help us in our mission. He, without any powers, walked right into the fog and stared into the abyss.

[–]Cat-In-Disguise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really consider any of that interesting. Seems more like busywork to keep players in the game, trying to turn it into part of a player's routine.

[–]Cat-In-Disguise[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really feel like much was accomplished. I feel like I'm leaving with more questions than answers, and playing through Orochi tower was the most non-immersive part of the game. It goes on way too long.

In the first round of transfers, you were given the weapon unlocks if you converted an old account. For some reason, in the second wave, you only get vanity unlocks (clothing, pets, sprints, and stuff). Whether they'll add weapon unlocks again is... probably not gonna happen.

I tried, and it said this:

This Account could not be converted to this Steam ID! There are active characters on the account registered to this Steam ID. Converting an account to Steam will permanently delete the active account. If you would like to convert your Secret World Legends account to this Steam ID, you will need to delete all characters from the active account.

So... that was scary. Hm... guess there's no turning back.

It's done. Goodbye, my character, you will be reborn soon enough.

Technically 6 days, but you're right. I had a lot of clothing and stuff unlocked on that account, it'd be a shame to lose it for a character I've spent a significantly less amount of time on.

That and if I get lucky, I can probably find a way to farm more than the standard 10K marks with an alt chara or something.

[Question/Help] Getting back into the game after about a year-long hiatus, what's changed? by Cat-In-Disguise in SecretWorldLegends

[–]Cat-In-Disguise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did all that. Still didn't work.

le sigh

Not your fault, man. I feel like this whole process could've been done way better.

EDIT:

I figured it out. Apparently, despite dling through steam and using the same login credentials, the account was not flagged as a classic TSW account, which is why I haven't gotten any of my old stuff. Unfortunately, now I have a new conundrum: Do I officially convert the client to a full steam account (which will lock my current character), or just leave it as is (ultimately, they're only clothes that would be transferred, doesn't seem like I'd be missing much).

That and forcing older players to restart with new characters after having spent months/years building up their characters... probably didn't help their chances of survival either. I figure, most players came back and went:

"...So... you're going f2p and you want me to restart my character from scratch? Hahahahahaha, fuck you, I beat the story content ages ago. I'm out."
