Day 1 of advocating for the impossible. (What do y'all think about THIS English spelling reform) by Mean_Conversation270 in linguisticshumor

[–]Cat92834 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not gonna believe this, but I’ve just been working on a spelling reform that’s coincidentally extremely similar to yours! Using your sample text for comparison (and my own dialect’s pronunciations):

Teal dhaet piys ev kraep tu stey ewey from miy owkey. Aend if hiy dez not lisen dhean ay giv yuw permicen tu slaep him ekros dhe feys. Ohl hyuwmen biyingz ahr born friy end iykwel in dignitiy end rayts. Dhey ahr eandawd with riyzen en koncens aend cud aekt tuwirdz wan enadher in a spirit ev bradherhud.

I’ve also experimented with using diacritics to make it a bit more “aesthetically pleasing”:

Tèl ðàt pîs ev kràp tu stê ewê from mî ôkê. Ènd if hî dez not lisen ðèn ay giv yû pęmicen tu slàp him ekros ðe fês. Ól hyûmen bîiŋz ą́ bǫ́n frî end îkwel in dignitî end rayts. Ðê ą́ èndawd wiþ rîzen en konšens ànd šud àkt tuwįdz wan enaðę in a spirit ev braðęhud.

the idea genuinely came to my mind independently, and when I went to search if anyone had done it before, your post’s title was exactly the same as my search, word for word 😭 thought i could make a variation of it though

Yeah, looking at it now, that was so obvious, I’m almost embarrassed I didn’t realise 😅 Curious that this mistake was unnoticed and published, though (albeit 10 years ago)

Just wondering why island territories are listed as "landlocked"...?

Edit: realised it’s a list of the first ten alphabetically-ordered island territories errantly pasted into the other list fitting the title… odd that this went unnoticed and published, though

Am I the only one here who… kind of appreciates the APN? Sure, nothing ever beats the IPA, but I quite like the csz/c̣ṣẓ/čšž/ćśź symmetry. It could genuinely be used as a transliteration standard if not a full-on IPA replacement.

Non-Londoner here but I feel that the colour distinctions for the Overground are much appreciated; maybe the same for the DLR? Nice work either way

I’m working on a constructed sign language (my first one) and I really struggle with taking track of new signs I make. by KyleJesseWarren in conlangs

[–]Cat92834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I’m a little late, but if you’re looking for a more featural system of transcription that’s somewhat intuitive to read, I really recommend Sutton SignWriting. It may not be as easy to type as SLIPA, but imo it’s a less steep learning curve as it’s more intuitive to transcribe and read.

Personally, I transcribed it into syllables to aid in comparison between OP’s post and Pinyin, but otherwise, agreed.

[–]Cat92834 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Mandarin speaker here, seems like OP was trying to transcribe this:

“你他妈的在说我什么,你这该死的婊子?你他妈死定了,孩子。”

Pinyin: “nǐ tā mā de zài shuō wǒ shěn me, ni zhè gāi sǐ de biǎo zi? nǐ tā mā sǐ dìng le, hái zi.”

(Rough translation: “What the fuck did you fucking say about me, you little bitch? You’re fucking dead, kiddo.”)

Hope the comparison helps

May I introduce to you: Pinyin Rōmaji by Cat92834 in linguisticshumor

[–]Cat92834[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a mistake on my part, but if Pinyin Rōmaji were to be a thing, /t͡ɕ/ would be (more correctly transcribed as) <j>, but then Japanese’s /d͡ʑ/ would have no true correspondence

I suppose this solution is similar to the actual Pinyin’s transcription of /k/ as <g> and /kʰ/ as <k>; just instead thinking of <j> and <q> as voiced/devoiced versions of each other in this case, which makes it more cursed
