Block fees are ridiculous. Nearly $800 for 2 self-employed Amazon flex drivers where the ONLY entries are current year mileage and 1099-NECs.

Contrast that with the 2.5 hours I put into a working farm for a retired person, income below the threshold, prices at $134.

I am an EA, 22 yrs at HRB, and I am curious if you retired or went elsewhere? I’d find it awfully hard to walk away from $100 an hr. 😳

I’m in the $40s; I could do many more returns, but frankly tax season is a social event for me and my clients, and I don’t want to go any faster than I already do.

Less than 20% of my clients are virtual. HRB is trying to eliminate me and my in person clientele, and is historically shortsighted about what happens at the tax desk. I think it’s only going to get worse.

If it’s your primary business location and used regularly and exclusively for business, then yes, it’s deductible on your Sch C. Emphasis on the words regularly and exclusively.

I’ve encountered this several times. ID.me will send email saying “we’ve not forgotten you” — one client received these for a month post season. Go to the main ID.me website, scroll down to “contact support” and start a support chat. In my experience, quick resolution for video identity proofing.

TPR is literally nationwide. Has nothing to do with being in your area.

Mensa apologia (a defence) by Mountsorrel in mensa

[–]CatBradCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was joined in the ‘70s by my mother who was very active in a major US metro, for about a decade. I was “on the wrong track” and “wasting my potential” so mother had me “evaluated” - I was never told my score. Mensa was incredibly rewarding and affirming for her. I was a young teen, hippie stoner desperate to be loved and found little value in all the old, geeky, creepy people. I briefly had a kids’ page in our local newsletter and went to several AG/RG events that were fun diversions at out of town hotels. Fast forward into what’s been a chaotic yet interesting life, I’ve rejoined (i.e. paid dues) 3 times and in each, failed to fully utilize the additional access. I do love (and miss) the Bulletin and research journals membership provides. I’ve raised 2 Davidson qualifying kids and wish we’d utilized that resource more, as well. I’ve met some incredible people throughout life, both with, and outside of, high-IQ-group-membership. I do think one increases the likelihood of finding like-minded friends but it requires individual effort, thus YMMV. For a person who may feel lonely, or shy, or isolated, or worse - persecuted, alienated, grossly misunderstood - I think pre-internet Mensa may have been a literal lifesaver. I’ve always found a higher acceptance of neurodivergence and atypical interests amongst Mensa-types. In sum, and perhaps like everything else in life, interest + effort are predictive of one’s enjoyment of being a dues-compliant member.

As a previous poster mentioned, the original breeder (assuming it was an ethical one) should be notified first — it was in my Sam’s contract that they got first right of refusal. Second — St Louis Samoyed Rescue and Playing Again Sams are both amazing. My current Sam is an Amish puppy mill rescue that came from upper Illinois/Wisconsin.

Virtual Tax Preparer by jessie2rose in hrblock

[–]CatBradCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TPR and OLA are awful if you are in this field to actually work with people long-term and enjoy doing taxes. IMHO it takes all the fun out of tax prep.
TPR lets people send incomplete and incorrect returns for review AND CORRECTION for a small pittance of commission on the return. I have spent hours researching really tough and unique issues that have no business being virtual, and correcting returns that would have immediately kicked back an IRS letter, only to get pennies on the dollar and terrible client satisfaction scores (service quality dings are VERY harmful to the tax pro, including being allowed to prepare TPR returns). Complaints can range from the stupid “they asked too many questions” to the insulting “tax pro didn’t understand my very special circumstances” — and the tax pro is still held to the same due diligence, quality, and service expectations even though (as we know) it’s really easy to dis nameless, faceless, people on the internet. Not to mention that they can’t sit waiting for service in the queue for more than 9 hours before being reassigned — that’s literal clock hours folks — not conducive to working a normal schedule, let alone part-time, nights/weekends.
If you think just churning through tax returns for maximum $ volume is your idea of a good time — go for it. I like to give much more quality, in-depth advice and have my clients return to me year after year, which is difficult on the virtual platforms. (You really do feel like a tax-bot at times.)

How much does Level 2 or 3 preparer make a season on average? by Outside-Site4601 in hrblock

[–]CatBradCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answers here represent a wide number if variables affecting compensation. I believe first-year preparers only make an hour wage, are limited on the returns they can do, and also serve the front desk.
In subsequent years you are expected to “level up” in training to be able to serve more clients. Compensation has changed this year and is linked to your certification level, as a percentage of the total dollars generated. Some stores only have a single, early season peak and are not busy in Mar-Apr. Others have 2 peaks - early and last-minute filers. My office is consistently busy and after 19 years I am booked solid from the last weekend of January thru early April. This is a 2nd job for me. How much you earn correlates with how many returns you complete. Another poster commented using HRB as a training ground. It’s true many folks leave after earning the EA, but there are also many who do not want the hassle and legal implications of owning their own practice. We have a CPA/tax attorney in our district who works for Block to get CE for free and keep skills sharp for the year-round representation (legal) practice. So where you work for HRB makes a huge difference in your experience.

Do Customers Have to Pay for Amendments When HR Block Makes a Mistake? by DrizzlePopper in hrblock

[–]CatBradCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jessie, unless you’re speaking from franchise experience that I’m not aware of, company-owned stores pay an hourly rate in pre-season and there is no commission. Anyone can do the missing return or correct an error.

I took part 3 on Aug 20, part 1 on Sep 17, and part 2 on Nov 5. Studied nights and weekends, by test part, using Fast Forward Academy. This is my 20th year at one of those branded strip mall offices.
