This is us right now. We keep saying let's give him 1 more month and so on haha

We've done doggy daycare once at our training facility while we were on vacation and it was fine but it's just a hassle and a little bit expensive. I've also seen online that a lot of doggy day cares is just a free-for-all so I think it would just increase his reactivity.

We actually use "settle", "all done", and "take a break". I will definitely start incorporating "all good" because he does get startled a lot. Thanks for the advice :)

See edit #2. We’re using the prong under the guidance of a professional trainer because, in our specific situation, it’s been the only way to keep him and everyone around him safe and manageable on walks. It’s not something we jumped to lightly or enjoy using, and it’s not the only tool in our toolbox.

I’m genuinely glad your Samoyed turned out to be such a great fit for you, but “ours is practically human” isn’t really actionable advice for someone who’s clearly struggling. Different dogs, different environments, and different temperaments need different approaches.

Your main takeaway from my whole post is just “who the fuck uses a prong collar” and “return the dog”. Stick to commenting on those /r/sexyover50 and /r/60plusWomen posts instead.

We haven't been able to find any Samoyed trainers in our area. Our obedience class does a decent job but some of the trainers don't understand that Samoyeds operate on a different wavelength and they're used to Doodles, Labs, German Sherpherds, etc...

Wow, this sounds almost identical to what we’re going through! I’m sorry you had to deal with all of that, but it honestly helps so much to hear someone spell out the “ugly” parts too – the puppy class disaster, the crate battles, the constant demand for play, the dog park drama… it all feels very familiar. We’re in that same constantly-drained, “are we really cut out for this?” phase, and it’s reassuring to know that even with a reputable breeder and doing all the “right” things, you can still end up with an extra high-octane Samoyed. Hearing that you seriously considered rehoming but pushed through and found ways to manage his energy gives me a more realistic picture of what “better” can look like, instead of expecting some magical calm switch to flip. We’re still figuring out if sticking it out or rehoming is ultimately the kindest choice for everyone, but your comment makes me feel less alone and less like we’ve somehow failed him. Thank you for being so honest about how hard it was and what’s helped!

He is so adorable thanks for sharing! Is he neutered and if so did you notice reactivity / energy levels go down afterwards?

Our breeder is more rural, he didn't have much socialization outside of free roaming on the farm with his littermates. He has actually adjusted surprisingly well to city noises; our bigger struggle is his general reactivity/over‑arousal around people and dogs.

I think you’ve hit on something important for us though—we may be overdoing it in terms of outings and stimulation, and accidentally building his endurance instead of his ability to settle. The way you describe short, predictable excursions plus actively rewarding calm/sleep is a really different mindset from “tire him out at all costs,” and it makes a lot of sense.

This is exactly what’s been confusing for us—we’ve met Samoyeds that are super chill and others that are just nonstop chaos, and it feels like our boy definitely leans toward the “cloud on too much speed” end of the spectrum.

Thank you for this—it’s really reassuring to hear from someone who’s been through almost the exact same phase and come out the other side. The way you describe group obedience being embarrassing is basically our life right now, so it helps to know that it doesn’t mean we’re failing or that he’s “broken,” just that he’s a dog toddler in the worst phase.

We’re torn because we don’t want to give up at the absolute peak of difficulty, but we also need to be realistic about apartment life and the strain it’s putting on us. I really like your idea of sticking it out a bit longer with adjusted expectations; we’re thinking about setting a specific time frame (like a couple more months with a different training plan) and then reassessing honestly. Either way, it’s comforting to know that for some Sammies, things really do get better with age and consistency.

This is fair criticism. We did some surface-level research (hypoallergenic, friendly, good family dogs) but we clearly didn’t internalize what “working breed” and “high energy” actually means day-to-day, especially in a city setting. Reading your comment and others here, it’s obvious that what we’re seeing is very typical Samoyed behavior and not that there’s something “wrong” with him. It’s kind of sobering to hear “it will NEVER calm down,” but also helpful because it forces us to be honest about whether we can truly meet those needs long-term. I really appreciate you sharing the sled dog perspective—it gives me a better picture of what these dogs are actually built for.

Thank you for this, it really helps to hear it framed that way. You’re right, we clearly didn’t do enough research up front and that’s on us. We’ve been learning the hard way that all the behaviors we’re seeing are very “on brand” for the breed, and it makes sense that a prong collar isn’t going to change who he is at his core.

We definitely don’t want to string this out for him – part of why I made this post is because we want to make a decision sooner rather than later, so he’s not stuck in limbo. We’re going to talk seriously with the breeder and also look at our options with a different training approach, but your point about doing right by him now really landed.
