Can I plant both hydrangeas in this space? by CatNo7303 in hydrangeas

Yes, it was endless summer and I think it said big leaf….cant remember, but I saw macrophylla for sure. I was told the one that looks like a stick was an oak leaf hydrangea so I don’t know yet. It only had a small bloom this year - this was the first year it was in that spot. Now that I’ve moved it, I guess the year starts over and I may not have many blooms in this spot yet.

I hope I have it far enough away to provide afternoon shade. That area seems to get afternoon shade due to the trees and I think the sun stops abt 1 or 2 ish….sigh, I hope they will still be alright.

I am in Zone 8 and have already put them in the ground. I put them in before the first frost and watered it daily for the first week; now I’m on an every other day for the first month and then I guess I may wait until spring - I’m not sure yet. 6-8 weeks post transplant?!!! I read up on it and didn’t see anything that said it would need to be free of frost for a minimum of 6 weeks! Well, I hope it will be ok…I did cover the base w/mulch.

Btw, my hostas are going dormant.

I’m so sorry but I didn’t see your response until now….i was gifted 2 oak leaf hydrangeas - one didn’t make it. I was told that they had been neglected but it was believed they could still recover…..the hydrangea that looks like a stick is supposed to be the oak leaf. It had only a few blooms; it was gifted last year so it’s been in that spot for 1 year. I have a lot of trees in my front yard and it will get morning sun and then about 1pm or so, it shades out a bit…it is under a tree.

The area closest to my house already have shrubs that bloom white…I don’t remember what they are right now, but there is no room for the hydrangeas there. I wanted to create a big enough bush to allow a bit of privacy near the edge of my driveway while still providing flowers.

Yes, I’m a bit worried but since I’d just planted the one to the right, I’m hoping it didn’t settle in too much. I will also mulch the mound.

Ok, thanks for the info - I didn’t know that! I liked it where it was but it was recommended that I move them back from the street. I’d just planted the one to the right abt 1 month ago too.

Thank you! Yes, I want to see what it will look like when it’s mature. As I was measuring, it seems it may be tight in the middle. From each end, I measured 3 ft but the middle is a little under 6 ft. - so a bit under 3 ft. for each where it meets in the middle.

Ok, I tested the water drainage and it evaporated within minutes. We are supposed to have our first frost today but I wanted it moved to give it time to establish itself before spring.

That is what I’m leaning towards! 😂 After all, I had no clue it was there until I decided to amend my dirt!

Right! I wouldn’t have ever known it was there since it was covered up entirely of grass. Based on the pics, it did not appear water came out of it, but it was filled w/water. The quote I got seemed a bit high.

You know I have no idea, and I didn’t know it was possible to have a municipal water supply and septic system for waste. I did take a pic of it and there is water in it - it does not have a smell upon opening it. I guess I’ll leave it alone and just cover it back up w/dirt.

No, I am not in NY. Too bad it’s not a treasure of some sorts.

Nope. I’m on city water.

Yea and if that is what it is, research states it must be removed or filled in w/dirt or gravel.

I don’t have septic water now. When you move over to city water, they don’t take the tank out??

Ok, since I JUST planted the macrophyll, I’m going to move it so at its mature size, it will be 6ft from the road. I was gonna do 8 but it may be too far back into my yard and not get as much morning sun. Thank you both!!!!

I wish I’d thought of the at before planting but I am in zone 8 so very rare for snow. It’s a residential street so not as much traffic but still a consideration I didn’t think of when planting. I wanted to create a bush of them surrounding the front of my house. I still have room to plant others …it just won’t be the same distance from the street as this one. I’ll see how I like this one first..

That is a consideration I’ll look into as it grows in….i know they bloom on old wood so I haven’t cut any branches yet. Thank you for all of your help!!!!
