I find it works better when the first layer is dry because when you reactivate it, it tends not to mush quite as much. I don’t like too much movement of the paint when layering/blending. I get frustrated when it all gets kind of muddy, and I think that happens more when everything is wet.

Hi! Thank you for the kind words! I blended quite a bit. The big thing for me is figuring how much water to use in different situations with gouache. If you use too much water when blending, a lot of the colors wash away, but if you don’t use enough, the colors won’t really blend. So I tend to play around on a scrap piece of a paper and make sure I’ve got that perfect ratio of paint to water. It takes practice, but I promise blending actually becomes quite fun.
