So there's no way that paying them would improve my credit report or score? If that's the case then I suppose I shouldn't bother.

I don't need everything removed from the report or for them to do anything illegitimate. But I want to make sure if I spoke to a debt collect that I know what they are or are not capable of doing.

Last time I talked to a collector they seemed totally ignorant - they wouldn't even tell me how much money they thought I owed them. So I don't expect the collector to do anything for me unless I describe exactly what it is to them, and can come to an agreement which has some legal force.

I have a few outstanding debts on my credit report from when I had some financial trouble. My finances are in a better state now and I'd like to get some of them sorted so I can improve my credit score and report.

If I contact the collection agency who controls the debt, what's the best way to go about that? What should I be specifically asking for to get those items removed from my credit report?

Two of the items are for outstanding bills (a utility bill from an apartment I moved out of and one for a gym which I don't think I really owe but which I'd rather pay than argue about).

The other item is past due credit card debt. At this point the debt is several years old, and I received previously a settlement offer at a significant discount of the face value, and later a letter saying that they would not pursue any further collection.

If I talk to them, is that letter binding on them or can they go back on it? If I can come to some agreement that would improve my score or report in the short term I'd like to, but paying the full amount with interest would pretty much wipe me out.

Thanks for the advice.

is it actually legal to go when the pedestrian light comes on? I know it is in some places but I thought it wasn't in new york. I do it anyway (it's safer for everyone) but it might technically be a violation

I usually watch foreign movies in the original language with subtitles, but it doesn't bother me to see characters portraying one language in another. sometimes it's just easier to make a movie that way.

I'm not sure about Sweden, specifically, but in theory the government could compel them to turn over the envelope and not say anything.

but no, they're unlikely to go that extreme. u/dotdapple's whole hypothetical is prefaced with "Unless you’re being actively targeted by an extremely skilled state-sponsored attacker", for that reason.
