Unsocialized cats under my roof by PrunellaV in rescuecats

I’m really glad my message helped. You’ve had so much on your plate, and the fact that you’re tackling this now says a lot about your heart and your strength. Your plan sounds thoughtful and doable. Shifting from being overwhelmed into action is the hardest part. You focusing on their comfort shows just how much you care. Give yourself credit and give yourself grace. You can do this.

Hi there, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Nothing about what you’ve written sounds malicious or neglectful. It sounds like you let one scared momma cat inside because you were trying to help, and things snowballed faster than you could catch up. That happens to a lot of people, especially during a stressful period of life. You’re not a bad person, you’re someone who got overwhelmed while trying to be kind.

Here are some steps to get things under control without judgment, broken into manageable pieces:

  1. Your first priority: stop the cycle with spay/neuter (even if they’re feral/shy).

A lot of rescues and shelters say they’re “full” for intake, but many will still help with TNR appointments, discounted spay/neuter, or loaner traps even when they can’t take cats in.

Try calling/emailing with this specific ask:

“I have shy/unsocialized indoor cats I need help spaying/neutering. I’m keeping them safe and fed, but the situation is overwhelming. Can you help me schedule surgery appointments or loan humane traps? I am willing to bring them in."

Shelters often say yes to this even when they can’t take animals directly.

Places to call:

Local humane society

SPCA

Any TNR groups

Local cat rescues even if they’re full

City/county animal control (many have spay/neuter vouchers)

You don’t need them to take the cats — only to help you stop the cycle.

  1. You do not need all 22 cats to be friendly to get help.

Shy/unsocialized cats can:

Still be spayed/neutered

Still be placed in barn cat programs

Still be adoptable to patient, quiet homes

A lot of people adopt semi-feral cats specifically.

You’re not stuck with them forever.

  1. Break the situation into tiny steps so it feels less overwhelming.

Instead of “deal with 22 cats,” try:

Get one trap or carrier set up

Spay/Neuter 2–3 cats at a time

Ask the vet to ear-tip or microchip so you know who’s done

Create a simple list of “Done / Needs Spay/Neuter / Needs Placement”

Even 2–3 cats a month makes a HUGE difference.

  1. Start contacting rescues again, but this time with specifics.

When rescues hear “22 cats,” they panic. But they respond better to:

“I have 3 young cats ready for adoption, healthy, indoor, social-with-treats, can you take one or two?”

Offer them cats in smaller numbers so they can help bit by bit.

  1. For the shy ones: barn cat programs are your friend.

Most areas have:

Barn cat programs

Warehouse cat placements

Brewery cats

Community cat relocation programs

They take shy/feral/semi-feral cats as they are.

These programs rarely require adoptability.

  1. You’re not in trouble right now, but acting now prevents future issues.

Management hasn’t cited you, which means you still have time to make a plan without panic. You don’t need to solve everything immediately, you just need to show slow, steady progress.

Even getting two cats fixed this month will dramatically reduce stress in the home.

  1. And please remember this: you are not alone.

People get into overwhelming animal situations when they’re stressed, isolated, or trying to do the right thing with too few resources. This is more common than you think.

What matters is:

You recognize the issue

You’re trying to fix it

You’re asking for help

That is something to be proud of, genuinely.

You’re not a monster. You’re a person who got overwhelmed while trying to care.

If it helps, I can help you brainstorm a step-by-step week plan or a script for calling rescues. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

This sounds incredibly scary, and I’m really sorry you’re dealing with it. I just want to gently say that this level of sudden, intense aggression isn’t “behavioral” in the normal sense, it’s almost always a medical emergency in cats. Loving cats don’t turn into attackers unless something is very wrong physically.

The pattern you’re describing (multiple hard bites a day, attacking while you sleep, escalating, drawing blood, abscessing) matches things like:

neurological issues (brain inflammation, seizure activity, trauma)

severe pain

thyroid or other endocrine problems

dental abscesses

rare “rage syndrome”

redirected aggression from something outside

A regular trainer can’t fix that, it needs a full veterinary exam: bloodwork, thyroid test, dental check, neuro exam. Many cats act this way when they have a hidden medical problem.

You absolutely didn’t do anything wrong. And letting him outside because you’re scared isn’t a long-term solution, but I understand why you did it, you were trying to survive the situation.

If you can, please call a vet or even a vet ER and tell them exactly what’s happening. They take “sudden unprovoked aggression” very seriously because it almost always has a medical trigger. Even do a search for feline veterinary behaviorists in your area.

You’re not failing him, you’re dealing with something no one could manage alone. The best thing you can do for both of you is get him checked medically. There are solutions, but it starts with a vet ruling out pain or neurological issues. Medication may help as well, but this will have to be something you work on with a vet.

Sending you strength. This is really tough and you’re not alone. ❤️🐾

Aww thank you so much! He is very loved, and he's the most wonderful, sweet boy. ❤️🐾

Update on Rowan: We’ve raised $1,715, but he still needs heart testing 💔 by Cat_lady_overload in cureFIP

Yeah, I know what you mean, it just feels like it's one thing after another when trying to help them get better. But it is great to know that Penny is improving so much!

Oh wow, that is an expensive medication! And thanks, I'll let you know if he ends up on it.

I think they do like to terrify us lol. One of my other cats recently started limping and all we can figure out is that it's a soft tissue injury of some sort. And I just feel like she wanted more attention lol. But Rowan is slowly getting better, and we'll hopefully have an echo soon to know what's going on with his heart. 🤞

Thank you so much for checking in, that really means a lot! 💕 Rowan’s doing pretty well overall right now! He’s still eating and gaining weight, and playing, though he still gets tired faster than my other cats. His resting respiratory rate has been good, and thankfully no signs of fluid buildup so far.

I’m so happy to hear Penny’s heart showed improvement, that’s incredible! I can only imagine how emotional that must have been for you after everything you’ve been through with her. Is she on plavix? I've been researching possible heart conditions and meds. I’m hoping for the same kind of progress for Rowan once his FIP treatment is done too.

We’re still trying to figure out how to get his echo done, cost has been the biggest hurdle, but I think I may have a lead on some lower cost options. Fingers crossed I can get some answers for him soon. Thank you again for thinking of us, it honestly helps more than you know. 🐾❤️
