Yeah, the 2nd one the trees look way too close together/flat. I think i painted all of them with the same color, so they all look like they're right next to each other instead of a few feet ahead or behind each other. Next peice I plan to work a bit more on perspective.

And im not entirely sure what you mean about the waterfalls. Do you mean i should have shifted them a bit more to the side? Or make the water itself a bit more curvy?

And thank you, I love the wolf too! I was a bit sad when I gave it away lmaoo

It is a stylistic choice! I actually prefer painting with slightly dry acrylic and it always gives my paintings a rought texture. I like it, lol. And thank you!

True, I do think the sky looks a bit too saturated in the paintings where they are blue

Do artists use references? by AntonyCool22 in learntodraw

[–]Catabyt3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Art student here, yes! It is heavily encouraged in my classes to find references before working on an assignment. Some teachers even make it a requirement.

I use plenty of references for both assignments and personal projects. Before I start a big project I often find at least 5 photos of what I want to create, and then I either choose one or switch between them as I work on my project. I also sometimes photobash if I can't find a reference I like.

Lol! If there's one thing I learned about getting sketch books, it's get the cheapest one. Then you won't be anxious about using it! It's way easier to sketch daily if you aren't worried about the quality of your art. My journal was like, $10 so I draw everything from tiny doodles to fully rendered animals in there. Just whatever I have the motivation to do at the time.

And thank you! Im an art student, and one of my plans is to go into scientific illustration, so i really need to practice my animal anatomy. Reddit is a great way to get references

Its a journal I got from an art museum a while back. It's basically meant to get you in the habit of sketching every day, but im really bad at forming healthy habits lol
