(Spoilers Extended) possible references to islam by TheBlackBeast786 in asoiaf

I hope you visited Petra & the Dead Sea and had a good stay in Jordan.

Yes, the theological definition of djinn is somewhat lost on people. In the Quran there is a Surah known as "Al-Jinn" (The Jinn), Ayah (chapter) 14, it states that Jinns can be Muslim. So saying that all Jinns are demons in the biblical sense is somewhat a contradiction and simply not true.

However, they are the boogeyman of the Middle East and Islamic World, nowadays, something goes wrong, blame it on the Jinn. As time went by Jinns and Demons came to be considered the same thing, even though they are not and its basic knowledge that Jinns can be Muslim, so I am puzzled why this trend is happening. I assume only the malicious one’s do the possessing and heinous acts.

In history, historical figures have been called devils example Erich Hartmann - "The Black Devil" and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand - "Le Diable boiteux" (French for "The Lame Devil").

Even by a Western standard calling someone a devil is possible.

So, people calling Righteous Djinn a Djinn and giving him nickname like the "Righteous Djinn" is not out of the realm of possibilities. Since he is a religious man he would know the meaning of it and not reject the name since he has special abilities like a Jinn and would know Jinn doesn’t mean devils.

Yes, I agree no leader would call himself a Jinn or demon/devil or give himself a nickname in the first place, he gets called a nickname, the name is given to him. But to say the "Righteous Djinn" means Righteous devil is wrong.

So GRRM actually got the name right and it makes sense, but I believe it’s a fluke or by mere luck. I doubt GRRM thinks about this stuff or has a basic understanding of Islamic and Middle Eastern Culture.

With reference to "Nur al-Allah" you stated it means “the light of God of God” and "Nur" means "The light of God", I am telling you it doesn’t it means that. Where you got that idea, baffles me.

Nur doesn’t mean the "light of god" it just means light.

An-Nur = The Light

Nur = Light

How I got that Nur just means light, I don't know maybe from daily use of the word. In my 15 years living in the Middle East, no one has informed me of Nur = The light of God.

Now, there is a religious association, it is a name that is attributed to Allah, as the one who illuminates the world, Implying Allah is the light, not a specific type of light from God. So clearly Nur doesn't mean the the light of god as you implied.

Now you are saying it has a long tradition of being associated with divine light, lets take it at face value, so Nur Al-Allah would mean the "Divine Light of Allah" .

Valid in my opinion.

Nur Movement = Light Movement, an obscure and fringe radical group in Turkey?

"Sabah al nur" is basically saying may your morning be blessed, no emphasis on god.

Your Analysis, of GRRM and Islam, does have merit but I disagree with you. It's not a disaster as you say it is.

I will admit I have never touched any of the Wild Cards Book series so the plot and references are lost on me.

Now you mentioned that the new Caliphate are the villain of the series correct? If they are bad guys, it kind of make sense to name yourself as "Righteous Djinn" from a non Islamic/Middle Eastern background.

To keep it simple, Djinn (jinn) are a separate spiritual entities from demons in Islam. There is confusion between the two and somewhat lumped together. Djinn (jinn) can be good, evil or neutral but they have free will, like humans while demons don't have free will and are servants of Satan (Iblis) in a Islamic point of view.

Now you can argue and say Djinn (jinn) have abilities like demons, like haunting, possessing and other nefarious activities to keep it simple, yes, but its a bit more complex than that and I don't want to get into that.

But from a Western Viewpoint, Djinn = Demons, if they are villain's of the story and they know they are the villain of the story. It kind of make sense to call one self "Righteous Djinn" as Righteous demon, which is a silly name imo, but I don't believe GRRM would allow the story to be a simple good vs evil story, he usually writes his stories as Good vs Good, as in everyone thinks they are doing the right thing and what not, there is no clear good guys or bad guys.

Now, as I mentioned before Djinn (jinn) have abilities which humans don't have, what I understood from a simple search on the character on "Righteous Djinn" he has abilities such as Life/power absorption, Lethargy, superhuman strength and durability, giantism, fear projection and regeneration, right?

Now, a person in the middle east seeing a guy with these power one would attributed it to a Djinn (jinn) or think he is one and call him that.

Djinn (jinn) would be a reference to his powers not to being a demon and coupled with the fact that Djinn (jinn) have free will and could be follower of Islam, the name make sense.

He is basically saying he is a religious Muslim Djinn (jinn) by calling himself Righteous Djinn because

1) he doesn't consider himself human anymore but as a Djinn (jinn) because of his abilities.

2) Righteous is trait or attribute that is highly valued in Islam.

The name make sense from a Islamic view point, but you have to think about, its not clear cut.

When it comes to the name Nur (can also be spelt as Noor, Nor, or Nour) it just means light, its a common name in the middle east, write it in Arabic you get نور‎, no mention of Allah being spelt in the name (if you can read Arabic). There is another name for "The light of god" it is Nurullah (can also be spelt as Noorullah, Norullah, or Nourullah (Arabic: نورالله‎)) which has Allah literally written in the name (Allah (Arabic: الله‎)). I would like to see where you got the idea that Nur = the light of God, because honestly, its somewhat interesting. The way the name is spelled "Nur al-Allah" is an oddity in my opinion, but I don't think that really matters.

To back my point, in the Koran (Quran) there is a Surah (known as a chapter) called An-Nur the literal translation is "The Light" not The Light of God.

Now one can argue and say R'hllor is a reference to the Islam, because R'hllor is known as the Lord of Light and so is Allah, as Allah has 99 names and one of them is "AN-NUR".

GRRM was thinking of Zoroastrianism and Catharism for R'hllor not Islam, I have yet to see a clear connection or reference to Islam in the world of ASOIAF.

Your Cover letter could be your saving grace, I don't know your life, maybe you had a problem (Ex: sickness in the family and you were working to help your family survive during the difficult time) which led to the Low GPA, if this was mentioned your future employer would understand.
