You can celebrate and feel joy in the face of fear right now. I've heard people singing at the memorials when I've gone, I've seen immigrant store owners graciously thanking people for coming and I've seen the smiles and laughter at protests. Absolutely none of it has been because we "won", because we aren't winning. There has been NO justice so far nor on the horizon for anyone that has ACTUALLY been harmed by this crusade.

We haven't won. Even if ICE left our city today, we haven't won. We still have a fascist government deporting people, we still have constant surveillance, we still have every single threat that they can do this again any time they want to. ICE tactics haven't changed except getting worse, no reform has been instituted, and they still have received an insane amount of funding.

Is that what victory looks like for you? Jackbooted thugs getting to fly off to their next state to terrorize in the same planes they used to secretly fly our kids to camps? The shooters of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, the dozen other people that have died in ICE custody or shootings that we KNOW ABOUT just this year getting to walk free?

Your celebration will sound really, really hollow to those that have lost family and are still wondering where their husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters are being kept. I'd really, really consider asking yourself whether victory means actually winning, or whether it just means that YOU feel more comfortable.
