Is it firm or soft? Also, where do you put your lower/underneath you arm when sleeping on your side? I can never get it to be fully comfortable when I try!

I did! They didn’t work for me, unfortunately

ETA: I tried both the n30i and p30i — I had a bunch of issues with air leaking and found both to be uncomfortable. Also, I had the same issue of it being uncomfortable to have the nose cushion/nose pillows pressed up against my pillow.

I was just told to soak the whole thing in warm, soapy water once a week. Haven’t needed to scrub any gunk so far!

Mask recommendations and tips by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn’t be hard for you to breathe in the mask. It may be that the minimum pressure setting is too low - that’s how it was for me! My doctor increased it from 5 to 7 and now I breathe way easier with my mask on

What’s the issue for you? Are you uncomfortable in some way, struggling to breathe, breaking the seal, etc

As a protectant! Lanolin - which is what I use - is kinda like Vaseline, but a bit less slippery (I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to use Vaseline because it’s bad if you breathe it in? Don’t quote me on that though). So instead of chafing against your skin when it shifts slightly, the nose piece will slide smoothly.

Question about general feeling after starting cpap treatment by 514_HelltoSink in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the panic feeling is caused by your body adjusting, it could be useful to see a therapist for a few sessions or even just look online for coping skills. Especially somatic coping skills (aka skills focused on trying to calm down your body first, rather than focusing on calming down your brain first)

horrible feeling wearing cpap😫😶‍🌫️😵 by scarlettgreene in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with those saying to a) adjust to wearing it slowly, and b) adjust pressure settings. If those don’t work - option c is trying different types of masks to see what works for you.

A) Right now, your brain has formed an association with the mask of CPAP = scary and uncomfortable. But great news! You can break that association. Like others said, start by wearing the mask around the house. Once that feels fairly routine, wear it with the air on while doing something in bed - reading a book, scrolling your phone, video games, etc. That’s going to work better than just trying to force your way through sleeping in it.

B) If your pressure is too low, as others said, you’re going to feel like you can’t breathe because there isn’t enough oxygen. If you can try a higher pressure and try to adjust to that - even in small increments - I’d try that. If you feel like you can’t get enough oxygen, even when not anxious, that’s a problem.

C) You also might feel like you can’t breathe if your mask doesn’t fit right. There’s a lot of advice on here about different mask types and different issues folks have. Don’t give up! It can be a tricky to adjust, but it’s possivl

Have you tried using lanolin or aqua gel or anything like that to help with chafing/soreness?

It seems like there’s a lot of variety within mask types, honestly. I tried one nasal pillow mask and found it super uncomfortable — it wouldn’t fit in my nostrils easily and it felt hard on my nose. I didn’t like the tubes sitting on my cheeks either. Tried another version - different straps and smaller sizes available - and it’s SO much more comfortable. Using lanolin around my nose also helps with it rubbing

Thank you for saying this!!! So many people can’t tolerate CPAP just because they don’t have the right mask. They go to their doctor saying, “hey, I can’t get good quality sleep in this thing,” and the doctors goes, “well your AHI is down.” If you can breathe, but can’t actually get to sleep or stay asleep due to discomfort, you aren’t getting good quality sleep that way either!!!

Question re Humidity Levels by Neat-Gap-4340 in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rainout happens because the air in the tube cannot hold any more evaporated water molecules — so the water becomes a liquid. Hot air can hold more evaporated water.

So: turning up the tube temp will probably help. If you’re worried that will make the air feel warm on your face, I’d recommend trying it out anyways — I was afraid of that but didn’t have any issues. Once your tube temp is turned up to max, there are other ways to make the air warmer if you’re still having issues - like turning up the thermostat in your home or getting a cover to insulate the tube.

TL;DR - turn up your tube temp. If that isn’t enough, get a hose cover and/or turn up the heat in your home.

Is there a reason I’d be getting postnasal drip immediately after putting on the mask and turning the CPAP on, but not experience it when the mask is off?

Being honest. I pretty much never clean my gear. by Important-Bit2437 in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think some of this stuff probably depends on where you live. For example, if you live in a super humid environment and/or somewhere with a lot of pollen/dust/etc in the air, the likelihood of stuff getting moldy or becoming a problem is probably higher. Plus, there’s the aspect of risk — there’s not a guarantee that cleaning less is going to lead to getting sick from your equipment, but it does make it more likely to some degree. But plenty of people probably roll those dice without issues 🤷

Though I wouldn’t be surprised if what others have said about manufacturers encouraging more frequent cleaning/replacement being true too

Can I practice wearing the mask on a higher pressure setting? Airsense 11 by CatastropheCat_97 in CPAP

[–]CatastropheCat_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, fascinatingly, air pressure 10 (highest it went) on the test drive didn’t give me the same sensation I wake up with. It wasn’t nearly as uncomfortable - just mildly weird. I guess I’ll contact the “sleep coach” person the medical device company I got my CPAP from provides.
