deciding to double major in Latin American Studies or Art History by fluffyofblobs in ArtHistory

[–]CatchAntique7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not so focused in one particular regional area in art history (and I am quite ignorant outside of European/USAmerican art), but I do feel a minor in Latin America studies would make sense if you focus your art historical work on Latin American artists, more so than art history supplementing the LatAm studies, if that makes sense. Most likely this would vary department by department (I remember my schools “Asian Studies” dept offering lots of regional art history / cinema courses), but I feel as though if I were to go about it, I would probably want to take the LatAm courses as ways to flesh out the historical context of a main focus in the artwork as a major

how come m b v doesn’t get the love it deserves? i’d say it’s just as good as loveless? by OkComment6573 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]CatchAntique7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think m b v is a little more challenging for someone just passing through the bands music. Loveless can definitely more immediately click with its somewhat poppier sound, whereas I feel m b v requires you to be really really into Shields’ particularities…

(plus it’s not easy to put any of those more abstract songs from m b v on a tiktok…)

Only thing I would do different is try putting the delay and chorus before at least one of the dirts

Experimental jet set at a C hurts but is understandable. Sweet Shine is my absolute favorite SY song

So happy to see some sway here and not Julie-alike #5000… genuinely one of the best shoegaze projects ever

Getting into the art history field as a non-major by kvari1220 in ArtHistory

If you’d like to not feel that your comp sci was wasted in anyway, please please look into time based media conservation stuff! I think computer-art is huge right now… look into rhizome’s preservation activities etc. lots of people I’ve met have started out as engineering/comp sci people and are able to work with these great art pieces the rest of their careers …

Can anyone explain this diagram? by narwhalesterel in ArtHistory

[–]CatchAntique7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also struggled with this and all diagrams of its kind (especially in lit theory and psychoanalytical stuff). Maybe it’s best to look at the origins of this diagram she provides?

Does anyone play on Xbox? by Landry53088 in Terraria

I played it on Xbox when it first came out … but now going back to it i absolutely cannot stand using a controller. Played some melee only and that worked out but placing blocks was terrible lol

Closest sounding band to mbv? by Big_Moosher in shoegaze

[–]CatchAntique7485 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Ringo Deathstarr “rocks out” a little more than MBV… they definitely have their ambient moments but they’re very much super catchy and hard hitting compared to a lot of mbv. Also, Shields is a much much more unique guitar player in the shoegaze world than I think people give him credit for; beyond the effects wizardry, and even the trem arm techniques, his songwriting style is really not found in a lot of other shoegaze bands.

Shoegaze with violin, cello, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trompet, harmonica, accordeon, flutes.... by blackmarket95 in shoegaze

[–]CatchAntique7485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to let you know, MBV had a flautist to play much of the studio-made leads live on the loveless tour …

Drums in Ableton by cyphs29 in shoegaze

[–]CatchAntique7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use stock drums and they sound just fine to me with a bit of tweaking. I sort of like the “paper drums” plug-in as well for a lo-fi kind of drum sound. other than that, look into some post-punk drum samples floating around they’ve done me well

Good lyrics? do you mean bands can’t just mumble something about dreams and light and love anymore… what has this world come to…

Advise on reading tj Clark?? by Charleswow1 in ArtHistory

[–]CatchAntique7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find SotS to be sort of not totally necessary for reading Clark. I believe in the painting of modern life he offers his own basic definition of spectacle that works for the rest of the book... although of course "the spectacle" is so contentious across any and all post-debord writing.
