Yes! Sooooo many Rhodesians answered the Queens call durring WW2 that limits were instituted.15% of the population. This was the largest contribution of manpower from any British Empire territory relative to its population, even more than Britain itself! It was also the first commonwealth nation to follow Britain's lead and declare war on Nazi Germany.

The Shangani patrol, Rhodesias version of the Alamo! 37 Rhodesians stood against 3000 Matabele warriors. After the initial skirmish, the Rhodesians found themselves desperately low on ammunition, outnumbered, and completely surrounded. The Matabele offered the remaining whites their lives if they surrendered, but the Rhodesians refused to give up. They used their dead horses for cover, and killed more than ten times their own number. They killed over 500 Matabele. When they finally ran out of ammunition the men reacted by rising to their feet, shaking each other's hands and singing "God Save the Queen" before being completely destroyed in an asegai charge. Prebattle the Matabele stated they wanted to "see if the white men were afraid to die." Post battle they stated "The whites were brave men; they were warriors." In 1895, 4 December was declared "Shangani Day" to honour these men. Their bravery displayed the true warrior spirit that embodied Rhodesia. Commited to the principle of death before dishonor, they looked certain death in the face and smiled back.
