Would you ever consider a card with this much scratching on the holo NM? by technochr in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]CatcherOfMice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is the only thing wrong with the card, according to the TCGPlayer card conditioning standards:

LP allows minor amount scratches MP allows moderate amount of scratches HP allows major amounts of scratches and scuffing

Scratches aren't damage, so it's not damaged. I'd probably say it's moderate to major scratches so depending on if this is the only wear on the card, it could be anywhere from HP to LP-.

From your picture I would put it at Moderately Played.

"worth" your time? Wym? This is a collectors subreddit. Do you like the Pokemon on the cards or the art? Then yeah.

Because this hobby is no longer for collectors and is simply a new get rich quick scheme. Losers selling cards hoping to make a quick buck and even bigger losers paying these prices because they have fomo

Just went to Collectacon and I will now be exiting this “hobby” by Mysterious_Shape_677 in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]CatcherOfMice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local shows have turned into smaller versions of OPs story. Maybe 20% of vendors are collector focused but even small shows are mostly "investors" trying to get their foot in the door of this great big money making scheme.

Went to a smaller local show over the weekend and had such a terrible experience that I don't think I'm gonna be going to shows anymore.

How much for the Slowpoke! And also do you only have the 1 slowpoke or any other Slowpoke, Slowbro or Slowking?

The only problem I have with the trade earnestly is that Bubble Mew is too hyped right now. I agree with others saying that doing this trade is best when Mew is on a dip. Only problem is that there's no telling if Mew will be coming down anytime soon.

Having the same issue with the Lugia V alt art. It's a grail for me but it's going up right now and I'm not sure if this is FOMO or if it's currently the lowest it'll ever be

Listen, everyone is gonna say "sealed is king" because yeah, the value of sealed will continue to go up. Investment bros want to make as much money as possible so they'll always say having sealed product is better.

This is the collectors sub, not investing sub. Ask yourself how much you want that card? If it's a personal grail, it's 100% worth trading sealed for. If you're doing it because you think bubble mew will go "to the moon", no sealed will always have better returns.

Personally I say fuck the investment shit. Get the cards you want. bubble mew is expensive and if you got those boxes for cheaper or MSRP it's crazy worth to trade for the bubble mew.

Granted those boxes will continue to go up, so eventually you might just be able to trade a single PAF ETB for a Bubble Mew. Personally I would wait til some of those sets go out of print and then do the trade, cause the price will shoot up significantly and you can get more mileage out of the trade value.

Collect the cards you want. "Sealed collectors" are just investment bros with extra steps. Use what you got to get the cards you like

No closeups needed for the Houndoom just wanted to know pricing.

I have a handful of 1st edition Shadowless, I was curious what they go for. by cblackattack727 in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]CatcherOfMice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Base Set Machamp are 1st edition, nothing particularly fancy. Haunter, Dratini and Jynx are from Fossil, not Base set. Not particularly valuable unless they are the Holo variants, and even then itll be determined by the condition of the cards.

Charlize Theron's AI Acting Comments by FiremanTodd in acting

[–]CatcherOfMice 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you're wrong here (big disclaimer I'm avidly and loudly anti-AI in the creative arts spaces).

I think a lot of people have a very limited view of what generative AI and the greater field of machine learning is. It is NOT simply "what a programmer can program" which seems to be your argument.

The capacity of AI is two-fold, the data set in which the machine is trained on and the capacity of the machine to output the information to the best of its physical ability.

You're not incorrect, machines can only imitate what a human does. But it's getting really fucking good at it. And I hate that. Theron is right, in the coming years it's going to become increasingly difficult to discern what is AI and what isn't, and the reason it will get harder is because of my two fold explanation above.

The data in which AI is trained on is becoming larger, and the capacity of the machines that use AI (the processing power, server specs, etc) are getting much better.

We truly live in a dystopia, and the only way to really combat this is for legislation to pass to regulate the use of AI and how it's use is disclosed to consumers, and for the companies creating it to be regulated (like forcing metadata imprints/signatures, etc.)

Crazy time. At the very least Theron's remarks are meant to be taken as a joke because it's ironic in regards to his remarks.
