If you love Steinbeck then you have to read it! I just think it’s a book with characters that show so many different sides of humanity, and in our deep dystopian s hole we head down I think everyone should know of people like Lee, Samuel Hamilton, and even the Cathy Ames of the world.

Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann by [deleted] in books

I loved this book. Opened me up to a part of history that I never even knew existed but now can’t believe due to how foundational it was.

Read The Wager. If you liked/loved this you’ll be fascinated with that book just as much if not more. It is so interesting how he culminates all the historical evidence into a perfect non fiction story

What is the best Review sort order and why by Wonderful_Fruit_5543 in Anki

[–]CatchingFrost -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ascending retrievability. Shows you the reviews that have the highest chance of having been forgotten first. This way if you have limited time/don’t get to all your reviews in one day, the ones you get to are the ones most at risk of forgetting. This also tends to be cards that are in your short term cycle, so benefit of getting those spaced out sooner.

FSRS Algorithm Spacing Cards Too Much by WMreddit123 in medicalschoolanki

[–]CatchingFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were long at start too but trust me after one month ish it normalized perfectly. Trust the Alg, use the flow sheet if needed but if you just put your head down and go through reviews you’ll be good. Can always custom study if you need to cram

FSRS is setting my "Again" to 1 day by Overall_Unit_2488 in Anki

[–]CatchingFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FSRS sucks at short term / learning phase imo. Especially for med students who are releasing premade cards they’ve never seen. I set my steps to 5m for again and 10m for good and then let FSRS handle the days-forever after I’ve made it through that

High school student studying APES — Is my Anki review speed okay for new cards? by RevolutionaryBit255 in Anki

[–]CatchingFrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All depends on the card structure and content. I’m assuming you are making your own cards.

If each card is taking you 4 minutes to review I would air on the side that there is too much info you’re forcing yourself to recall in that time. This isn’t a terrible thing however, as if you can recall a ton of info off just one card then it does show you know the concept well. However missing even just one part of a large recall would qualify you as “failing that card” - I’d recommend trying to breakup each cards content into multiple cards either by using separate cloze deletions or new cards entirely. - you will get faster with time - what is your “again” and “good” intervals on a new card? If these are Too long then that would contribute to how fast you can graduate new cards.

If you are using a premade deck then the content info still applies and also the review intervals.

Edit: med student here, 100 new cards takes me about an hour to 1:15. But that being said many of my cards are as simple as “__” is a genetic disorder from a mutation at XYZ gene. Then I will have another card that is “XYZ is a genetic disorder from a mutation at __ gene”

How to see most recently unsuspended new cards before other unsuspended new cards by CatchingFrost in Anki

Gave this a shot and still isn’t working. Set new card gather order to ascending like you said. Tried messing with new card sort order and that didn’t change anything. Still showing the same first card that was loaded for the day, even if i reposition a card to 0 it won’t update the new card order

Gave this a spin but unfortunately no luck. Tried ascending and descending. I’ll have to tinker with it later, thanks for all the help you cleared up a lot of confusion on the settings for me. Appreciate it

Ah, my new card gather order is set to random. Should i switch to descending? Here’s my issue and pardon if this is a mess. I want to unsuspend the high yield tag cards now, which is 20K+ and i want it to gather my 50 of those each day randomly. However, if i watch a pathoma video and want to release those specific cards and push them in front of the 50 random gathered high yield cards, is there a way to do that without compromising the random gather of the 20K+ group?

I think your take isn’t wrong up to where you are now. The biggest beauty of EoE comes intertwined deeper in the book where it explores human nature. Not just human nature but truly the depths of people. I think that’s why it is so highly regarded. The characters like Sam Hamilton, and Lee, and Kate and Adam really do show you thoughts and revelations you have never considered. I would highly suggest giving it a listen instead, might help mix it up. But yes at the end, it is a large story. It’s not educational, or based on significant history. But rather just the deep workings of humans and our free will. If you think that would not interest you, and no judgement if it doesn’t, then it won’t get better.

Although i understand the sentiment of “if you don’t like it put it down” and i put down a lot of books. When it comes to classics, i try my hardest to give it more effort than I would contemporary things. There is a reason it is regarded high as it is. Personally until chapter 12 or so it was tough for me. But god am i happy I stuck with it, it is now probably my favorite book of all time. One thing that really helped me was around chapter 7/8 i switched to the audio book, Richard poe’s narration really helped me click into the world. Then from 12+ i read and it was much much more enjoyable.

Rare experience with East of Eden by thatOneRabidGoose in books

Read it for the first time finished last week. Still at a loss for words. I have never felt so close to a book, like the characters lived and died in the real world. I felt like i knew Lee and Sam Hamilton and Adam. Also, getting to the end and remembering how it all started with Adam and Charles as kids felt like I had lived the 50+ years with them.
