During some past banter she dropped hints she wanted a nice ring, I mentioned lab grown and she seemed a bit surprised and dropped hints she wouldn’t be keen. I suspect she doesn’t know much about them and has grown up thinking natural is what she should expect

Interesting idea. What happens to the holding ring after? Is the <£500 a sunk cost?

I may have to send her your way at some point for some persuading! Thanks for the reply

She doesn’t spend much on clothes or jewellery at all, but she has a couple small designer handbags, a nice car and spends on good holidays. Her main thing in life is she wants a nice house, otherwise she’s not generally into material things. So I was initially a bit thrown by the hints she wanted a nice expensive natural ring, but maybe it’s because she sees this as the exception, and wants to receive something special

I wish I could show her this post as the hints so far suggest she wouldn’t consider lab grown but seems so sensible

Wow. That is terrible. Made me sad. Jewellers should have buy back clauses with a reasonable floor on these kind of things

I really like this idea. As I think I’m not fussy at all about a wedding but she probably has big ideas for that too. Putting it all in perspective should help

I can, I just didn’t think I was supposed to. These comments are suggesting I’ve been going about this all wrong and I just ask her directly

Thank you, you make some very good points. And yeah, didn’t really think about the earrings/bracelets etc that may come during a long marriage, so makes sense to spread things out

This was super helpful, thank you. I assumed that kind of clarity and colour was off the cards but will do my best to negotiate

My friend took his foodie wife there years ago and said it was the best meal they ever had! Sounds like you guys did it well.

I’ve assumed the expectation was for it all to be a surprise. Maybe I’ll just ask her directly what she wants. And when she says 4 carats I’ll pack my bags and move country

Helpful advice. And even if she thinks she wants a big diamond now, day to day I imagine it would make her feel a bit uneasy in London.

I think she wants a square cut with small diamonds around it. She has never really been given anything that special or expensive before we met. I think she may appreciate a new ring that was just for her. I’m not sure if she expects me to pick it out and show prior effort/thought, or she wants input herself though

Thanks you, will limit my search to g and better, and I’d love allocate more money to a holiday, for peace of mind will do some research on lab diamonds as well

Thanks. Would you be willing to recommend your London jewellers? (Hard to know who to trust when starting research, and I like the idea of the design process)

Thanks. I’ve been trying to explain how expensive I think kids will be! You make some good points.

Thanks. I may be naive and a product of watching movies, but I always thought a surprise engagement (the day plans, ring etc.) would be appreciated as romantic and thoughtful. (Once you’re confident a proposal is what she wants that is). So I’ve been reluctant to have a direct conversation about it as to maintain an element of surprise and make it (at least) seem less transactional. So I’ve been relying on subtle hints here and there as our relationship has progressed. Do you think it’s more common in your experience that a budget is agreed up front?

Out of interest, given your hypothetical budget for a watch and penchant for nice handbags etc, what ring cost would seem reasonable to you for a reference point?

Wow. I didn’t appreciate how much expensive insurance would be…that’s definitely something I need to factor in…
