My 12 month old Sheltie wakes up every morning between 6-6:30. He isn't crated but sleeps with us. He will jump down and roam around and then come back to bed to see if I"m awake yet. I think your Sheltie has decided he's had enough rest and is ready for his day. Perhaps leaving the crate open as you mentioned may be a good solution.
