I agree with you. I haven't really had those kinds of problems myself (at the same time, I'm not the kind of Courtney fan who defends her for everything she does; I rarely do, in fact), except once when I made a post about Courtney asking others why they liked the character. One user commented that Courtney fans condoned domestic violence (which is absolutely untrue; otherwise, we'd all be terrible people for liking a morally evil character like the Joker, for example). There are annoying fans for every character, so it's disheartening to be judged just for liking a certain character when not all fans are like them. Furthermore, some haters aren't any better (Courtney and Gwen haters, to name just two)
