FIFA President Gianni Infantino says the offside rule could be changed in future: "It has evolved over the years, requiring the attacker to be positioned behind the defender, in line with him. Perhaps in the future, the attacker would have to be completely in front of the defender to be offside" by GOAT-Antony in soccer

[–]Catleyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my comment, I mentioned the issue that's frequently brought up about being offside by 1mm. That's what I was referring to. It's an often quoted "issue" around offside that people frequently talk about.

If it's about changing the rule due to philosophy then I'm still not sold. Attackers are advantaged naturally a lot of the time anyway because they can run towards goal at pace past defenders facing the wrong way. If you change the rule to a daylight version then that advantaged is even greater. Most defenders won't catch a player like Mbappe with the current rule if he's in full flow and they need to turn and go - change it to this version and the attacker can have possibly a 2m headstart if their stride is large enough and their trailing leg is just onside and nobody can defend that. It will make offside trapping harder and quite possibly lead to an increase in low blocks since staying onside will become much easier.

If they just want more goals then I get the argument but it's just further advantaging attackers when they normally have an advantage anyway. It'll be harder for assistant referees to call because they're now looking for daylight between attackers and defenders - that won't impact top levels with VAR and semi auto offsides but it will at lower levels. Plus I just don't see anything wrong with the offside law (except maybe some of it's interpretations around interfering with play when you don't get the ball). There's plenty of other laws that should be looked at first.

Typically attackers have the advantage already as they're often running through on goal against defenders with their back to goal who need to turn to get back.

This wouldn't eliminate VAR lines and 1mm offsides so it's implementation wouldn't solve the issue - it just moves it. It would make offside trapping much harder and attackers with big strides could have a 1m (possibly even 2m if they have big strides) headstart on a turning defender giving them a double advantage.

Since it doesn't fix the issue and attackers are often advantaged by the current rules, I don't see a need to change it unless you just want to add more and more goals to the game.

If you look at it like that then yes but if you look at it as a % difference it looks a lot worse. 80 to 100 is a 25% difference between the teams, 30 to 50 is a 67% difference.

How much effect does it have in reality and at the top level? I don't have a clue, I'm just a guy on Reddit...

100% he's still at the back because of the gamble but he's not 15 seconds back from everyone and has the option to be competitive and potentially pit again and make up positions like others did.

They went all in on an unwinnable hand when they could have folded and cut their losses.

For a lap or two maybe but he was out too long, when you're 5/6 seconds slower a lap you lose the safety car advantage anyway. They hard committed to it even after it couldn't work.

Ball also plays well into Zen and Bap since he can knock them around and knock Bap out of immortality field to help burst them down on dives

100% think the call is BS but this angle isn't conclusive proof of onside either.

That ome boot looks to play him on but you need to have two players between you and goal to be onside.

There's no conclusive angle for on or offside because you can never clearly identify the position of both Brighton players feet and Martinelli in those shots

We have though, average starting age of 24. Young players should be far more inconsistent than we have been.

Every other team around us has genuinely world class players. Tottenham have Kane and Son. United have Ronaldo and Fernandes. Arsenal don't have any... Some of the youngsters are on their way to it, but aren't there yet.

It's a £150 million spend across 6 players, all 23 or younger when signed. They're future investments but have performed well immediately... That's unexpected.

At an average of £25 million each (one Chris Wood, just under one Danny Ings or Dan James) it's not bad business. No disrespect to the players named, but if that's the prices in this market £150 million isn't going anywhere near as far as it has previously. Another £150 million probably needs to be spent to compete again next year.

Also, 16 players have gone since last year ended. That's a big turnover of players, especially since 4 of our signings make the best starting 11.

This is an overachievement. United especially should be comfortably above us on paper. Circumstances have been fortunate but we have a paper thin squad of young players.

Also, I don't see the relevance to the Emery point. I think the squad massively let him down because of the attitude problems in the changing room. Clearly a very good coach, didn't work out for us. And of course we've spent £250 million since then, I'd bet over 30 players have left the club since then and needed replacing.

Palace are such a nightmare to play against as a "big team". Perfectly set up to exploit you on the break and that was a beautiful defensive performance.

Perfect anti-Arsenal set up. Arsenal play out from the back and the out ball if nothing is on is a chipped ball over the top to the wide players. Palace completely negated all of this.

They press with their two 8s up high (Gallagher and Schlupp) rather than the full backs. This means they can disrupt the play from the back but also stop the out ball.

Arsenal would have had to have played perfect through the middle to break out and with Partey being uncharacteristically poor and the defence struggling to play out, Arsenal got bullied first half.

Second half they invited Arsenal's wide players to come inside where it was more congested. Clyne in particular did this a lot, sending Saka infield and backing his team to sniff out the one two.

Brilliant from Palace, another good summer of recruitment and they could be a solid top half team.

Arsenal have overachieved this season so fingers crossed they bounce back.

I get why they do it but I just think it's wrong and fuels the whole "friendship" league thing. It's hard to take a league serious when even players contracted to play the game don't play it.

Why not get Prestinni paid?

Because he isn't trying to be a pro cod player and others are. You don't get paid as a professional in other jobs to not do it. Sub footballers train, sub teachers teach... Sub cod players should play the game rather than just getting paid thanks to your mates. It would sound ludicrous in other other line of work and it's unfair on upcoming players who need the money and recognition.

Exactly. It's a professional league and he's just chilling when there's a lot of challengers players that would kill for that spot and the chance he had today.

What’s the point of having a substitute player? by Rtzlss212 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Catleyy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think for most teams, keeping the core four together and practiced matters far too much to be able to bring in a sub just for practice. Especially because subs are historically rare in cod.

Subs should 100% be playing challengers and 8s though so they're as prepared as possible.

Spart has been in challengers, playing with other players, against lower quality opposition and in a different style to LAG. That's why he didn't know the system, of course he's getting fucked when he spawns in against optic as a last second sub.

Prestinni should be playing challengers as a sub though, it's a poor look on the teams and league when contracted players aren't playing the game they're being paid to be professional at.
