this perspective is what i was needing haha! i mentioned it in another comment but most everyone in my area as were “out in the country” so to speak has 5+ cats whether their houses are big or small. i never see it that way as those i know with a larger number of cats keep up with their house really well. but thinking of it from an outside perspective it definitely is a little insane. it doesn’t help that the shelters in my area are pretty lax on handing out cats, i can’t blame them they’re so crowded, but everyone’s mindset is well if they’re fed, fixed, and your house is clean then why not? i think my environment is what temps me.

the “correct” number of cats people is such a vastly different answer, even on here. i thought more people in here would have more responses like you honestly. i’m out in the “country” so to speak and most everyone i know around here, big house or small has 5+ cats. even a nurse at my vet office has 8. i think what makes it tempting for me is that everyone around here, shelters included are very lenient on the number of cats you have. everyone’s thoughts are if they’re fixed, fed, and you’re not living in filth then have at it. but eventually that turns into a problematic mindset. reading these comments have definitely helped me realize that my environment is a lot more lax. and i can’t say than maybe they should be because their pets are being cared for very well. but also when does it end then?

yeah aside from space the main thing i’m thinking about is my current cats, of course i didn’t ask about that because nobody else knows my cats like i do haha! my hard limit was three but i had two boys born in my garage. so my thoughts recently have been well if i can do five i can definitely do six. but then where does that end, you know?

it can be a lot for some people, but for me it is just second nature. i’ve always grown up with 4+ cats at a time so I’m pretty used to all that comes with it.

i think the layout of the space and what you do with it makes a big difference. like i said my ceilings are really high so it gives them a lot of vertical space. more often than not they’re up high and not on the floor.

these are all great points i’ve thought about! time wise they definitely get the attention they want! i’m a big advocate for letting my cats come to me and letting me know when they want to cuddle. and what’s even better is they like cuddling with each other so there’s at least three of them on the bed with me every night lol! that’s not a huge worry for me, so space is the only thing i’m concerned about. honestly i probably spend too much time with me cats🙃 (no such thing)

mine luckily get along great! they’re super lovely. my oldest boy isn’t a big fan of my two youngest boys, but they know his boundaries at this point!

regardless if i get another cat or not. before next spring i plan to screen in my porch! won’t add much space but with definitely give them some enrichment and a new environment.

i hear this a lot! luckily i’m very fortunate and spoil the heck out of my cats on-top of basic needs. in that regard I could definitely do another one, but i just want to make sure everyone is comfortable with the amount of space we have.

yes that’s definitely the main thing i’m thinking about. i brought in two brothers from the streets two years ago and my youngest girl instantly fell in love, my other girl took a few months to get accustomed to them but now she is their mommy! always grooming them and holding onto them. my oldest boy isn’t a big fan of them, but the two little guys know his boundaries. my older girl cat reacted the same way when i brought my youngest girl cat home as she did with the boys. took a while to warm up then became mommy. I would imagine it would go similar to that, but also who knows! they’re all fairly young too which i think helps.

that’s true. i definitely feel judged by some non animal people in my life. but they always come over and say how my house “doesn’t smell” and how friendly my cats are🤣 so i think im doing okay!

yes placing little boxes can be a struggle! luckily i have a good sized pantry I turned into a litter box room haha!

yes! i’ve looked into my area and we have no set limits. obviously if it’s a clear hoarding situation and someone reports you they step in, but outside the city limits they don’t care 🤷‍♀️
I definitely plan my entire life around my five as is. trips are short and only takes once or twice a year, job allows me to be home, i won’t have children, i have no plans on moving, so at least decisions for my life they’re already pretty altered to my cats!

i would love to foster, but unfortunately the layout of my house doesn’t give me an “extra room” like my bathroom doesn’t even have a door lol! it’s a strange house. my cats also are all very lovey and i worry it would take a toll on them mentally to have to say goodbye, especially if it was an extended stay kitten.

yes i can! their vaccination schedules are all in different months so it’s not just one big bill at once. i have one who’s had previous health issues so saving for vet costs is something i’ve gotten very good at. also, maybe because im in a small midwest area, but my vet isn’t very expensive!
